"I just sold a run of 1-7, missing 6, but with issues 2-7 signed by Kirkman and Moore for $620."

"Sell now while it's hot. You simply can't lose. The book could peak at $400 in CGC 9.8, but most likely it's already reached it's top price. Nine times out of ten, when books blow up in price like The Walking Dead 1-5 have, they'll come right back down to earth within a year.

Sure they have low print runs, but so does every other book these days and almost every copy has been preserved in NM or better condition."

"Sure, I'd love to have copies of the originals, but right now, I'd rather have the (IMHO) stupid money they're bringing on ebay. Give it a year and the hype will die down. I'd be willing to wager that you'll be able to buy them back for 1/2 what you sold them for."

"not if the series is still going strong

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Honestly, I really disagree with that. Even if the book continues to kick-, the "hotness" will eventually wear off and all the hype-motivated bandwagon fanboys will begin to lose interest.

I love the book, but to sustain the kind of market momentum it has now, it would have to generate a hit movie or some kind of mainstream success. Otherwise, the Wizard readers will find something new to latch onto and the values will start to decline.

There are 7,000ish copies of issue one out there. That's not enough to go around with the current press the book is garnering, but once Kirkmanmania subsides that'll be more than enough to drive the book back to the $40 range. Especially since they're mostly all NM or better."

man oh man

people sure do a good job acting like they know what they're talking about.....

i wonder how many people listened to them and decided not to invest in WD because of it.

you need to get out more. the entire financial services industry is made up of people acting like they know what they're talking about while the vast majority have no clue. how many pundits said AAPL was overpriced at $200? that's $300 BILLION AGO. you're talking about 300 copies of a book that went from $500 to $1500 like it's meaningful.

One of the oddest and yet truest maxims of Wall Street is that the bear case always makes more sense.

As I recall, WD 1 and 2 were hot right away. By the time issue 7 or 8 came out, 1 and 2 were both in the $30 range. It might have leveled off for years...but the first issues didn't take long to go up.

That's not what I remember at all - I started buying WD off the rack at around issue 6, due to the owner of my LCS saying it was a good read. At that time he was out of #1s (he'd only ordered two copies), but I went back a couple of weeks later and picked up 2 through 5 for cover price.

There really wasn't any momentum on that book for quite a long time - I paid $10 or so for the first WD #1 I bought off ebay.

This is exactly right. It took quite some time for it to gain steam.

I had started Invincible at #1 because of the He-man Preview. Loved his writing and the art. Kept hearing about Walking Dead and Wizard was starting to pump it. So I went to Mile High and picked up #6 or 7. Looked at the back issues and found a #1. I can distinctly remember being so mad at how much they had marked it up. It was one of those situations where I was going to protest and put it back (Mile High's M.O. is to mark-up for no apparent reason). The price? $8. And the book is a definite 9.8. Move forward to 2007 and Kirkman comes to Mile High for a signing. Made sure to be there first to get it signed. Isn't it ironic, don't you think (insert Alanis)?

Now Chew was completely different. That book was sold out in our shop on the same day it came out. And not throughout the day, within moments. The Walking Dead preview got a ton of people interested and it didn't leave much time to increase order sizes. I was pretty bummed not to get a copy. Took me quite smoe time, but I got lucky and a guy sold me a killer raw 9.8 copy for a fair price.

On 99% of series they would have been correct. WD is definitely the exception, not the rule.

Edit: I didn't even realize that I'm the 'they' in your post. Keep thinking I don't know what I'm talking about - I was able to take that money I got from my Walking Dead run and turn it into AT LEAST 2 nights of fun in Atlantic City. Now I'm married, so although the books are worth 3x as much, all the memories of hookers and blow are priceless.

how could you possible know who 'they' is

Uh...because I'm the person talking all kinds of on the Walking Dead's investment potential in the 2007 thread linked above and quoted in Hawkman's post, to which you were replying.

So when you get married you are supposed to stop the hookers and blow? Oh .... I just got married - guess I need to change my ways!

Of course not! You should swap the blow for heroin...but the hookers are perfectly fine. ;-)
