Most Overpriced/Undervalued Modern?

260 posts in this topic

I never said all collectors need a CGC 9.8. I said those that want them are collectors. See the difference?

OMG...how hard is it to grasp the concept that you are not making fair comparisons? If you only want to compare CGC 9.8s, then compare CGC 9.8s (316 to 0). If you only want to compare collectible copies, than compare collectible copies (7000+ to 200). Your statements as you spell them out would be fine in a vacuum, as isolated comments...but you didn't state them as isolated comments, you stated them all at once in the context of one point being made.

You are comparing the quantity of CGC 9.8 WD #1s to the quantity of WD 94 B&W, within the context that collectors fuel demand for both, so therefore their relative scarcity is comparable. And yet this totally discounts the fact that (a) the quantity of WD #1 CGC 9.8's will continue to increase, and (b) there are plenty of other "collectible" copies of WD #1 (either unslabbed, or at a different grade).

And...if you want to make the argument that some collectors would not be satisfied with anything less than a CGC 9.8, then you need to also acknowledge the fact that only a small percentage of WD 94 B&W will end up as a CGC 9.8 (either due to condition, or lack of submission, or both).

See the difference?

If I may venture into the actual discussion...

It seems to me that a manufactured rarity (such as only 200 copies) of a book that is otherwise unimportant

(such as the 94th appearance of the main character) is basically a limited nothing.

No matter what you multiply a nothing by, you still get nothing. It's a shiny rare nothing, but nothing all-the-same.

WD #1 is a something. 7,000 of something might not be enough.

200 of nothing might be plenty.

I think we will just have to agree to disagree.

There is a crowd that wants a WD #1 CGC 9.8

There is a crowd that wants a WD 94

The crowds may have similar members or completely different members.

My only point was that in both cases the # available is less than the crowds that want them.

This type of comparison is done across product lines and services all the time.

I can think of 250 reasons that your argument about WD 94 BW "being nothing" is incorrect ;)

Give it time. 90% of all variants fall by about 90% after 90 days.

90% of nothing is nothing, so by your logic, this book will never fall in price?

(shrug)

Currently, it's $250 (raw). I'm saying there's a 90% chance it will one day be $25 (raw).

There are 316 census verified copies of WD #1 9.8

There are not 316 9.8 WD#1's available for sale.

Of the 9.8 WD#1's for sale, they still seem to be selling and going up in price.

8-9 months ago, amidst speculation that this book had surely peaked at $600 and would start to trend down, I said, "I believe this book has legs."

Even now, I believe it isn't done.

I very rarely make predictions on modern speculation, but I still believe this book isn't done yet.

The #94 variant? Fleeting.

Fleeting I say! lol

That WD #94 is a fantastic cover, but I was noticing that the $250 sale included a regular #94 variant and a Thief of Thieves variant as well.

Can a story driven comic like WD have a variant that competes with artist driven variants like those listed above?

Have any of the other WD variants held value?

Not TODAY. One day. Big difference. Everybody thinks they've got something special while the ink is wet.

When the ink dries, it's still Walking Dead #94. Issue number 94... the issue that... what happens? Anything?

What happens when the #100 variant is limited to only 100 copies?

What happens where thare are only 10 copies of a #110 variant?

Artificial scarcity is always about what's new. If the only thing a variant has going for it is scarcity, it's got nothing.

Scarcity happens all the time.

Time keeps draggin' on.
