Hurricane Sandy

Yesterday, in Freeport Long island, residents lined up for up to six hours waiting for a rumoured tanker truck that would give out ten gallons of free gas per car. People drove there from upwards of thirty miles away to get the free gas. of course, it never showed up. Meanwhile there were three gas stations within a mile selling gas, with lines no more than an hour long.

Today FEMA did give out ten gallons per car of free gas, but more and more stations are opening up. Went out awhile ago and filled two jerry cans just in case, and the line for walkups was eight people deep.

Papa Johns added an additional $2 fuel surcharge for their deliveries. My local pizza place isn't delivering but offered a 5% discount for carryout today.

The storm followed the coast. People well inland from the coast are fine. Its not a matter of looking at it with rosey colored glasses, its a matter of looking at the facts. The vast majority of New Jersey, New York State, Long Island and New york City are up and doing fine. Power is back to well more than half the people who lost it, but in NJ only about 15% of the people lost power to begin with.

Here on Long Island, about sixty five percent of people lost power for more than two hours. The majority of them now have power. Power Authority says 90% will be back on line by Tuesday.

What town were you in that people were trapped in their houses for days? Where is it? The storm surge went out with the low tide everywhere I've seen or heard of.

Gas is not an issue for most people in Northern or Central NJ., nor for upstate NY. My cousins went to Albany to ride out the storm Came back yesterday and said there were no gas lines anywhere north of Westchester.

Gas lines today were under thirty minutes, super-markets are open as are most other businesses. Yesterday I wrote about visiting my friends neighborhood in Howard Beach and how bad it was. I neglected to mention that there are two shopping malls within ten miles of him and they are both open. My friend lost his bay front condo but his nite club was open last , not more than five miles away from where he used to live.

People need to realize that NY State is almost 300 miles wide and well over two hundred miles from north to south. That New Jersey is a fairly large state that extends out some seventy five miles west of NYC. This was mostly a coastal storm, unlike Irene which did more damage inland than it did to the coast.

82,000 people went to the Meadowlands for todays Giants game. The Knicks and Nets played before this. Compare that to what happened after Katrina.

Schools reopen tomorrow. Compare that to NO after the storm.

It was a bad devastating storm that ruined many houses and costs a lot of lives,

but for the vast majority of people in the tri-state area, the worst that happened was we lost power and now have gas lines.

Hoboken NJ. Took three days for the water to go down. Half the town was trapped in there houses. Search it on Utube captain facts. :screwy: I was driving around during most of the storm....while you might have been asleep in your bed with your rosy glasses thinking about selling comics...or maybe pressing a key book to get a better price for it when you sell it. I was going into my towns old folks home when the power was out at 2AM....and knocking on everyones door to see they might be on oxygen...and if they were, relocated them to shelters with generators to power what they needed to survive. Then having to carry some of them down 10 flights of stairs because they use walkers. I should have those people this is not a big deal.

I am sure some people do not think about areas they can't see... if the mall is open on their block and their friend has a night club opened EVERYONE else must be fine.

I am quite sure they are not thinking about people who need assistance especially the elderly or the sick. A person in a wheelchair who is quadriplegic may very well be trapped in a building with no working elevator or escalator. a rescue person or policeman checks the building and that could very well save their life. A person who needs oxygen or constant medical monitoring isn't able to get up and go to a friend's house without someone assisting them.

I cannot be in cold..not cold weather ,not cold water, etc. If I was forced to go out into the cold or had no heat I could go into anaphylactic shock and need at the very least my electric breathing machine(and with no power I would be SOL on that) or a shot from an epipen. Being stuck outside in a wet chilly area would kill me.

I am sure (not being the only person on the planet with the disease) anyone in the areas affected by the storm who does have what I do the cold + no heat could be fatal.

Anyway, Thanks to the people in jobs who help those need.

I read your other uninformed post last night while I was working. It did make me laugh! Saying that I must be lying about the flooding in Hoboken and how was the bar life during and after the storm (the whole town lost power for three days...so there was no bars open). I also now see you have deleted it. I guess you either clicked on the Utube links I included or spoke to your "MANY FRIENDS" you claimed to have had in this area. Nothing rosy about those facts? Right?

I deleted it because there is no point in arguing. I never said you were lying, nor did I feel the need to resort to baseless insults. My friends live on 1Oth street in Hoboken, and off Summit Ave in JC( an apartment I once lived in myself) and say there were several bars open in walking distance from them. A quick check of google shows the entire town DID NOT lose power, google 'block party on 11th Street in Hoboken"

In any event, your city is one square mile and was flooded by salt water- from the ocean, which was my point to begin with. People not near the coast didn't suffer anything near what the barrier islands and coastal communities did.

NJ Power says there are one million people without lights. That means 85% of the people living there have power. Its around 95% for NYC and 90% for Long Island.

What percent of Nawlins had power a week after Katrina? The NY airports opened within 48 hours of the storm. Nawlins airport was closed to non-relief flights for weeks.

I'll say it again- The storm was an unmitigated disaster for many people in the area, but most people escaped with nothing more than power interruptions.

On a personal note- I was scheduled to put in a tour at NCCs shelter that was put up for evacuees tomorrow. They are now hoping to have the shelter closed by then.

I waited 3 hours for gas today in Brooklyn. Up since 5 A.M. this morning. If i didnt have orders that needed to go out from my warehouse i wouldve slept in. People were asking me what we were waiting on line for since we were backed up 3 miles. I told them coffee.

I got lucky last night after work at 3 AM and happened to drive by a gas station that was just opening with no line...waited a total of 3 minutes to fill up ...my heart goes out to those that have lost (my cousin lost her home in oceanside) :foryou:...I'm centered on the island so I only lost power for 30 minutes and had virtually no damage from the storm...hopefully things get back to normal soon :wishluck:

Should have come out to the island. BP statioin on Hempstead Tpke just east of 135 has gas and lines about 15 minutes long yesterday.

Hows Coney Island? Did your folks evacuate or ride it out?

My family down in Wildwood, NJ lost their house to flooding and it being floated up off its foundation and into the bay. My wife's family out in Rockaway, NY had their entire house flooded and destroyed, and her aunt and uncle's home in Breezy Point, NY burned to the ground along with 110 others. I'm happy for those not effected by this storm but for me and the ones I care about, this was a completely devastating and life altering storm and not something I enjoy being made light of. My wife and I live in a one bedroom apartment in Jersey City and there are presently 13 people staying there on and off along with two dogs.

I passed that gas station on my way to work. The line is over a mile long.

Coney Island looks like a war zone. My parents didnt evacuate. They just got power back the other day and the elevators starting working on Saturday. They are good. The 12-foot surge we got over engulfed my work van and my father's car. Its all replaceable though and we are grateful that we are all ok,

If you want to read some amazing stories, read up about the volunteer fire companies in Breezy Point. One group was stranded and forced to walk thru chest deep water for a half mile until they reached what they thought would be shelter, only to find a couple of dozen people there that needed rescuing.

Most of the homes in Breezy are uninsulated summer bungalows that burned in minutes. I spent many days and weeks there as a child as my fathers side of the family had places there. The people there don't own the land the houses were on so it may complicate any rebuilding efforts.
