So, this is a few blocks away from my apartment:

I had no idea. My place is fine, my block is fine, everything I can see is totally fine. Weird huh?

whoh!

Anyone from the Hoboken, NJ area? Is it as bad as they say it is on the news?

Yep...And yes it was!

Spoke to a buddy who lives in Hoboken and says he's OK.

Will try to get more details.

Says he's taken in 2 families. They are powerless and his garage was flooded. Tough times out there.

Yeah it was pretty crazy here for a bit. I just got power back on last night. All of the flooding in town has gone down. My friends sent me these videos to my email. I dont understand how my house did not flood. I might be the only person on my block who was not pumping out the basement.

Well luckily i can say my family is alright. That is the most important thing. My parents live in Coney Island and they didnt evacuate. My brother Charles headed from a show in Jersey to stay with them while i drove back from Austin, TX with Bob Storms. My work van which stands about 7 feet high was completely submerged in water and my father's car submerged as well. I got to their neighborhood and it looked like armageddon. Water was still in the cupholders of the van and the roof inside my father's car was wet.

My parents have power now but the elevators are still not working as they are pumping water out still from the elevator shaft. They live on the 22nd floor. This is beyond anything i have ever seen and have knots in my stomach still.

Bottom line is everything that we lost can be replaced and as long as my family and friends are ok, i could not ask for anything more,

Jeff

Still no power, looting has begun. Luckily they said if someone enters your home without permission, handle your business. In sick of sitting in the dark, but at least I have a home. My jobs been closed for a week so far. Don't know when they will get power to get going again.

What part of NJ are you from? We caught a few looters the other night. We have a ton of guys in (PD) no one is given any days off until further notice. We drive around all night looking for people walking around...and we tell them there is a curfew (which is a lie) and to get off the street. People who look like they are up to no good we start talking to and run for any open warrents in hopes to get another creeper off the streets. But if full power does not go on soon, I am sure people will get real crazy.

If you listened to Sean Hannity today, you'd think NYC had imploded. He was calling for the National Guard, claiming tens of thousands of people were trapped in Manhattan, and that people were starving on staten island. He actually tried to say the situation was worst than Katrina. He made it a point to say there was only one gas station open in his town. What he neglected to say is there is only one gas station in his town to begin with.

Gas lines are long. Is this unusual for the week afrer a hurricane?

Electricity is slowly being restored, many more businesses are up and running today.

I heard the NYPD finally was able to rescue the folks who had been stranded on the escalator in midtown since power went out.

Not the slightest sign of civil unrest or looting in my neighborhoods.

While not on a Katrina scale, this is still a very bad situation. It is getting colder out, a NorEaster is forecast. In some parts of Staten Island there really are people who have little or nothing to eat. So many have no homes. I just want to see that we learned our lesson from Katrina and get as much services to these people ASAP. Thank God they didn't have the stupid marathon. Thank God, this wasn't an July/August storm that could have been a strong Cat 2 or 3, you probably could triple the loss of lives and damage.

This storm couldn't have happened in July or August, as it took a combination hurricane/NorEaster to fuel this.

As far as Staten Island goes, more than half the supermarkets are open for business as usual, as are most of the McDonalds. Cells service is working and no one is trapped there. You might not be able to buy milk or get gas, but you can get peanut butter and other foodstuffs.

On Long Island, its now estimated 100,000 homes or businesses were either destroyed or severely damaged, but power has been restored to about 80% of the island and the vast majority of people have open stores within walking distance.

The casinos in Atlantic City have reopened.

Things are far from rosey, but they are just as far from grim. No one is trapped by floodwaters, there are more than enough shelters for the displaced and 85% of the people are returning to as normal a life as one has here in the Center of the Universe. Schools reopen Monday.
