I remember buying this issue of the newsstands and I still have it. Although, I highly doubt it's still in HG.

Why? A newstand on that is probably more common than the direct.

The rationale is that the newstand copies were pawed and molested and are virtually nonexistent in 9.6 and up. Whether this is true remains to be seen. The logic is sound, but all newstand environments were not created equal. GOD BLESS ...

except newsies might have outnumbered direct 5 to 1 or more back then, so I am dubious. Has anyone studied this in the 78-79 era?

Nothing serious ... one thing I know from around here, most of the early direct shops evolved from newsstands or used paperback stores, so I'm not sure how handling was conducted in the beginning. At least here in Tidewater, many of the early shops had shelving rather than spinners, but the first store I ever remember with consistent comic supply was in North Carolina, and it also used shelves, and this was the 60's. Spinners were not as ubiquitous as many assume. GOD BLESS ...

in 78-79 my shop had racks and the comics were just as likely to get damaged there as at the newsstand. The way you'd have minty comics is if the owner (or file customers) was buying extras for future spec, but a book like that, I doubt it, because marvel team ups that did not sell on the rack went into the 25 cent box.  I honestly do not know if they even had file customers at my shop in NYC. When did the "on your honor" system for newsstand unsold books end, because frankly, if it was still going in 78-79 and the unsold books were just going into mafia storage, I'd think you would have a lot of high grade newsies. Anyway, all speculation, of course.

Godzilla 24  $686  in heavy bidding. https://www.ebay.com/bfl/viewbids/115919336387
Picture 1 of 2

jordysnordy's Godzilla Marvel registry is complete and beyond approach, so does that eliminate it being battle of registry collectors?

Very difficult final issue to find in high grade unlike #1 of which there is near endless supply.  Although in the last ~16 months the 9.8 population has grown from 9 to 14 and its no longer the least populous issue of the title in that grade.

As you and I both know the Red covers are tough in High Grade.

I've been on a scooby-doo kick myself for some reason. I currently have a gold key #3 getting graded that looks pretty good hoping for a low 9's, I also have a marvel 1 and a charlton 1 that I'm including in my next submission the marvel is a solid 9.2+ the charlton looks like an 8.5 to me but we'll see.
