Sony Online Entertainment’s former CEO just declared war on the Lizard Squad hackers

The Sony PlayStation Network (PSN) and Microsoft Xbox Live Christmas service outage last year left many people red faced and angry, but few have taken it to the level of Daybreak, formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment, CEO John Smedley.

Late last night Smedley spewed a torrent of hate against 17-year-old Julius “zeekill” Kivimaki on Twitter mere moments after the youth, who describes himself online as an “untouchable hacker God,” was convicted of 50,700 computer crimes charges.

The offences related to Kivimaki’s participation in the Lizard Squad hacking gang's "operations" and will see him serve a two-year suspended prison sentence.

Kivimaki is believed to have taken part in a high profile cyber attack on PSN and Xbox live in December 2014. The incident saw the Lizard Squad target the gaming networks with a special type of attack, known as distributed denial of service (DDoS).

DDoS attacks don’t actually hack services, or steal data from their victims, but are instead designed to knock online services offline. They work by overloading the back end servers running the services with requests — the equivalent of spamming them to death.

The December incident left thousands of people unable to play Xbox and PlayStation games on Christmas Eve and Christmas day.

Smedley’s vendetta against the group and Kivimaki is more personal, as he believes the youth is responsible for a bogus bomb threat that landed a plane he was on in August 2014.

In the tweets targeting Kivimaki, who goes by the Twitter handle @what_security, Smedley made a series of threats, claiming he is “coming for” him and is considering mounting litigation against the ex-Lizard Squad hacker’s parents. You can see the full series of tweets below.

Kivimaki isn’t the only Lizard squad hacker to come into Smedley’s firing line. He also targeted ex-Lizard Squad hacker Vinnie Omari, tweeting him an ominous message warning “he’ll get his day in court too.”

Sure. I get it... But this is the CEO - comments seem very unprofessional. Just an outsiders perspective. I also see this "declared war" as a pretty stupid invitation to thousands of kids with nothing better to do than play cyber war.

It does say he's a former CEO, but I agree the comments are a bit unprofessional.

Not sure but I think the copy write on the code behind behind most of the games has expired.

The copywrite on the games themselves are still good

PlayStation CPU Powering Probe Travelling Towards Pluto

MIPS R3000 CPU used in original PlayStation is being used to transmit data about Pluto back to Earth.

The New Horizons space probe which recently completed a flyby of Pluto and beamed new images of the planet back to Earth is being guided by the same CPU which powered the original PlayStation console. As reported by The Verge, the probe contains a MIPS R3000 CPU, repurposed to "fire thrusters, monitor sensors, and transmit data."

The same CPU was used in the original PlayStation console, which was first released in 1994 and ran at 33.8688MHz. It was implemented by NASA scientists in the New Horizons Space Probe, which was launched in 2006 and has travelled more than three billion miles in its journey.

According to The Verge, NASA has always preferred hardware that has been "tried-and-tested" over newer technology, which may be riskier to use. Reliability is prioritised over power, which is why a 12-year-old CPU was used, with a few tweaks made to help with surviving in space.

Various gaming hardware have been employed by NASA in its past projects, including use of the Kinect and Oculus Rift to control a robotic arm in real time. NASA has also revealed plans to use Microsoft's Hololens augmented reality headset in the International Space Station, where it will provide support and guidance for day-to-day actions.

My kids have been loving the Lego Marvel game. My 3 year old son just likes messing around. He drives cars and flies to the Helicarrier and stuff. My 10 year old is having fun trying to get characters. Right now she is trying to find all the Guardians of the Galaxy characters and she was surprised to learn Nova was a Guardian since he wasn't in the movie.

Lego has really been genius with all these games.

i wonder if these easter egg is a hint to a JL game.

That is one really cool easter egg.

Wasn't Starro a whole heck of a lot bigger than that?

He had mini Starro's that would latch on to a victims face ala facehugger and take control of their host.
