Mike Dringenberg - :-(

722 posts in this topic

I'm confused.

Was mike given money to sign the books before he wrote to eBay on it?

Also there were like five guys behind the first guy with Seans books that had piles of books that were windowed

Confused is an understatement. It is never OK to deface a book. As a professional you ask for more money for SS books like Adams does or refuse to sign them like Rosa does.

If you really want to mess with them speculators, why don't you try this crazy strategy: sign EVERYTHING for CGC. Put out 1000+ books that you've signed. Make it so that having a book with your sig is attainable. When you're done with that? Sign some more. Hell, go out, grab your file copies, have someone grade them, go to the CGC booth at a show, sign them and sub them yourself.

What does your statement have to do with defacing a book?

Nothing. It's more of a reaction to Mike Dringinberg's statement that he showed the speculators by defacing people's books. A common suggestion for creators upset by people profiting by getting their signature is that creators should charge a fee, which is a perfectly reasonable response. I'm simply saying this: if you want to make it so that your signature can't be readily monetized, make your signature abundant. Sign everything. Or sign your own books and profit yourself. That is all. Mike Dringenberg defaced a book. It was unprofessional. It was uncalled for. I have already stated that.

It's a more sensible approach than shytting all over someone's book with a stupid statement about resale concerns. You didn't catch that?

I think the best way to deal with a guy like this would be to have everyone agree to just not have him sign anything anymore. Well...that and if you find yourself next to him in the men's room pee on his shoes.

And Rosa (every time I've seen him decline) has been a professional about it, not a passive aggressive cockmonkey like this guy.

[and I window bag all of my CGC SS books and have only sold 1 ever]

[Aside: I wonder if the artists know the cost of getting a book slabbed or they think that some ebay seller just turned my signature into $50! [when in reality it means the seller might have broken even on his costs, or lost money once you factor in the cost of attending the con along with the slabbing/shipping fees]

How many books were initially brought to him?

Was money ever offered?

Ten pages - I feel sorry for Sean but I hear a lot of crying.

The guy can sign how ever he wants. Nine times out of ten if you window bag your books you're selling them.

It should also be mentioned that he did atleast one free sketch on a sandman 8. It was the one personalized "to ?"

No one is justified in writing "for EBay" on someone's book. Don't sign, whatever. But he had no cause and no justification to deface my book based on his stupid preconceived notions.

Tenuous grips on reality, compromised brain cells, and scant few bits of knowledge regarding property rights makes for an ill tasting stew.

Someone always has to swim against the current.

So I have a lot of love for the series Sandman. It is my favorite series of all time. I have gotten tons of contributors from the series - Gaiman, Kieth, McKean, Zulli, Thompson, Hempel right on down the line. Other than Michael Schmidt, I think it is a fair bet I have as many SS sandman books as anyone.

I was so stoked when I found out Mike Dringenberg was going to be at ECCC. Co-Creator of Death, designer of Desire - he is a huge part of the Sanman milieu.

I thought about cracking out my 9.8 #8 with Gaiman or my new #4 with Sam Kieth. But at the end of the day, with the dogpack handling my books, I figured it was easier to send a prepped raw book.

Thank god, I did not. Because here is what Mike Dringenberg did to my book:

Apparently he has been personalizing everything (which I am fine with - i would have been over the moon, if this said "For Sean") and with a large volume of books he got pissy and started doing this to books.

I am trying to find some kind of humor in it, but it is tough.

Shout out to all the homies and everyone at ECCC. If you see Mike Dringenberg, give him the finger for me.

What a dlckface. These clowns who get paid to sign autographs or sketches and then complain when they get resold have got to be the stupldest creators in the hobby. I don't care how talented you are, if you don't understand one of the most important concepts of the hobby that puts a roof over your head, you are a class-A-bonafide-dumber-than-a-box-of-rocks-plnhead.

Adults know what a bailment is, how it's violated, and who was wronged in this situation.

Children have to google bailment, and spell it wrong twice before figuring it out.

I would highly recommend anyone with a Twitter account to issue a warning to convention-goers and fans, hashtag #MikeDringenberg and link @EidolonFineArts (his rep) about this BS.

"Anyone attending cons, beware of #MikeDringenberg defacing the comics he's autographing. (signing 'For Ebay' on fans' books)@EidolonFineArts"

I would love nothing more that to see this idlot's behavior re-tweeted - even just a little - over this.

I hope that some day I will find it funny. It may be a couple of days.

I know I aggravate the hell out of you most of the time, (hell, who am I trying to kid - all the time) but you are decent guy and certainly don't deserve this kind of karmic kick in the arse. I'm sure something equally surprising, in a good way, will come along and even the score.

:foryou:

+1

For a guy I've never met, seeing that done to his book makes me want to get Hulk angry.

Maybe it's just because it's Monday.
