Here are the books I ended up with.  My budget was low as I also bought a piece of original art...

Sweet books! Croydon Coles always welcome and that's a sharp copy of Universe. I just upgraded mine to a similarly unread looking one for the permanent collection 👍

Totally sweet pick-ups indeed - the paperbacks too, but especially your piece of original art. It was great chatting with you and putting a face to the nick. You're not half as menacing in person as your surly Doc icon!  :nyah:

xD And I won't call you Bill anymore.  :foryou:

Likewise, great conversations!  I think that's what was best about this convention.  So many great guys and gals talking about shared interests and having a blast sharing them with each other.  I saw Michelle Nolan again and she's always a wealth of knowledge.  Roger Hill was there, Greg and the gang from Dreamhaven.  F. Paul Wilson stopped by our booth and shared some great recollections of writing stories for Warren magazines.  Really fun to talk to.  The whole place was just like a comic convention from the 70s.  Just a bunch of older collectors showing each other cool pieces.

I was fortunate to hang out for dinner a couple nights with 3 guys that were on a whole other level as far as illustration art goes (one was the gentleman that sold me the original art).  They had some amazing stories about how various publishers ended up finally dispersing their cover art, or how certain artists ended selling what they had, or even the evolution of individual artists and how their style evolved over 40-50 years.  Hope I get a chance to meet up with those guys again!

It sounds like they'll be back on schedule for 2022 so the next Windy City Pulp Convention might be in May.  Looking forward to it!  (thumbsu

Just recently posted and read this Irish novel. Really liked it so took the opportunity to pick up a pretty spectacular untouched, glossy looking copy

Couldn't resist this unread early Belarski Popular. One of the less common ones (note the Windy City reference🙂)

And one Pat introduced on this board... the true 1st of this Whittington Handi Book to go with my Harlequin edition.

This is a great bunch of books!  I lucked out on that copy of Universe.  It looks like it was just printed.  Got it for $40 from another pulp and paperback dealer that was fun to chat with.

Sure.  It's an unsigned, interior illustration from one of the early 60s Men's Adventure magazines.  I spoke with Fred Taraba (one of the illustration art dealers at the show) and we're pretty sure it's by Gil Cohen (but I'm hoping to ask Bob Deis for verification).  The piece is large, maybe 24" x 36", framed.  It's the usual fare for those mags- Nazis behaving poorly, scantily clad females, etc.

Very nice. Yeah, i'd agree Gil Cohen for sure but Bob would be the man to ask. If you can identify the publication it was in you're set.

Bob confirms, Gil Cohen.  Still not sure which issue it was in so now the hunt is on!  :sumo:

I'll keep an eye out in my visual travels. Secondarily to working on listing Ray Johnson's paperback covers, I've been adding his MAM output on a separate list so I've been checking out any interiors whenever they're actually scanned in on ebay (thumbsu

Delving into two authors I have not read yet.

First up Strange Witness by Keene, nothing great condition wise but looks to be an excellent read.

This book just might be the tip of the iceberg of Taine for me. Having read the first few chapters of The Greatest Adventure by Taine I'm hooked.

I feel like I should watch a Doug McClure movie.

That is a sweet copy! Took me two years and several losing bids before I finally landed a nice copy of "Street Girl". Some books are just not in the marketplace often at all, especially in nice grade.

I remember when I first started posting in this section several years ago and I mentioned "I Married A Dead Man", Avon 220 as one that collectors didn't seem to part with much. I really jinxed myself there :pullhair: because it took until last week for me to finally land this nice one :whee:

Copies do pop up here and there but ask is always high relative to the condition. Also, there must have been binding issues with this title because there always seem to be bad problems with uneven pages, spine slant and cracking, the cover printed off center et cetera...  Square, well centered copies with minimal creasing are few and far between. Happy to make a home for this one in the collection, no vintage pb collection should be without one. Having a copy in hand again, I'm somewhat convinced that Harry Barton painted this un-credited cover. He was painting for Avon around this time, the bride's face has that Barton girl look and none of it looks like Ray Johnson or Bill Randall or any other of the Avon painters of the period.

A fantastic cover!!
