So is this board mainly full of high end collectors?

184 posts in this topic

I am trying to get a sense of the environment here. I could be wrong but it seem like most of the people here are really high end collectors and I feel really out of my element.

I have not collected in years and to be honest back when I collected I just would pick up anything that I thought had a good story or artwork. I am wanting to get back into collecting again but I have a very limited budget and if this truly is a high end collectors board I would not really want to waste your time because I really do not have the money to be a high end collector.

I would like to gain some real knowledge about this hobby and become a real collector instead of a guy that just walks around buying comics. With my budget issues really high end collecting is most likely out for the time being but

Where are the best sites or books I can pick up to get a general idea about really collecting and would you guys even want me to stick around because I really do not want to get in anyone's way.

I had to check to make sure I didn't post this as it sounds like my story. But yeah there seems to be a lot of variety in terms of collecting

I am relatively new here, but I would say there are quite a few high end collectors. I'm not saying they are the majority, but they seem to be the one's with the loudest voices or at least are the most active on the boards. Now, everyone loves and wishes for the grail books, but I don't have a single one. I just posted a pic of my newest Sgt. Fury & HHC #9 Don/Maggie pedigree CGC 9.2 in a few different threads and no one gave two s about it. To me, it was the most expensive (and one of the nicest, even compared to 9.6's I have) books I have ever purchased, but to most it is nothing. Unless you buy or have a high grade Hulk 181, an AF 15, TOS 83 or something along those lines, your awesome comic will be to many here. I have never even seen any one of those books in the flesh, only pictures! Many of the people on this board are nice and here to help, but there are a few that come off as plain rude. So, prepare to be pissed off at least a couple of times.

I can estimate the value of my entire collection at about $3,000- $4,000, so I would say the majority of the boardies here have at least one book that's worth at least that in itself and there are probably more than a few that have books that are worth many multiples of that. Quite a few of the members here own shops, or at least sell at nearly every comic show. There are quite a few who keep their books in safes and locked up in bank vaults, so you know there is money there.

To me, $350 is a ton of money to spend on one book. I do have one low grade (2.5-3.0) key book Sgt. Fury & HHC #1, but I bought it in 2002 before I took a hiatus from collecting. I think I paid $60 or $70 on ebay as a "reader" copy. It's at CGC right now, so I'll either get a 4.0 ish winner and make a 6x return on investment or I'll get a 2.0 and triple my money. (It doesn't matter as I doubt I'll ever sell.)

So, just be prepared to be often ignored, and many times outdone, by a lot of the boardies here. They have been there done that and really don't care much for the little guys. I know I've asked many a newbie questions and a majority here forget what being the newbie is. They'll let you know. That being said, there are a few that treat this like a "community" and stretch out an olive branch. I personally can say so for bomber-bob, joeypost, timern and a few others. They may be big time, but they help out the little guy!

I would add to that. Like any other assemblage or niche based community, you'll find your popular crowd (where else can you be an uber nerd and be the popularity king) who gets accolades (nice find!) for posting a low grade piece of drek, while others pour their hearts into a post and get ignored or heckled. One reason is that a lot of posters often know each other in person and travel to events together, so they feel more comfortable about back-slapping and accolades. Other guys get respect by being the biggest beer drinking village nimwit. A lot of ways it's kind of like prison here, I guess. I never really felt like I fit in much, but still find enough interest to cavort around here.

Yeah I'm that guy in the prison movie that has a pet mouse.

I got my street cred by picking a fight with CAL my first day

It took me a couple of postings before CAL called me a person_having_a_hard_time_understanding_my_point. All because I thought we were in a renaissance with regards to modern comic content.

Some of the posters around here refuse to believe modern comics have anything to offer. The last book they read was Uncanny X-Men 137 and anything published after that is pure in their minds.

Welcome. There are all types of collectors here. You'll find forums dedicated to every era from Golden Age to current books. You'll find dudes working with large and small budgets.

You won't find a better place to learn about the hobby so please stick around and ask lots of questions.

+1

WTTB! :)

It's not possible. You are either retired or no longer have to work because of a disability. (Guessing.) Everyone else has school, work, etc. which will prevent them from achieving your breath taking amount of postings.

I think comics are better now than ever before. But that includes the amazing selection of reprint material. The variety and ease of finding such variety are unlike any time before.

But if all you look at is Spiderman then too bad for you. Keep believing comics are garbage ;)

Anyways, congratulation on the retirement. I'll be joining you in a few short years. Then my posting count should increase. :D

We aren't all high end collectors. Some are, many aren't. There are plenty of people here on budgets, and some that aren't (or at least it seems that way). Some people collect moderns in 9.8 and that can run you $50/book or less (until the book gets hot). If you are looking at older books, consider mid or low grades depending on your budget.

What most of us are is passionate. About comics, past and/or present. About the medium, about the art and about the history.

Collect what interests you. Collect it with a passion. If you are on a budget start with a narrow focus. And maybe not high end. And then later expand.

Participate in conversations. Listen far more than you talk (or in the case of the message board read far more than you post). Find the subforum that lines up with your passion. Spend time there, but also spend time checking out the other sub-forums (modern comics, signature series, restoration, etc) to learn more.

So what were you thinking about collecting?

This.

The boards are definitely not limited to high end, but those are the books that will get the most "oohs" and "ahhs".

Buy was you like, that you can afford and you can never go wrong.

I like high grade books (who doesn't?), but I don't limit myself to a certain grade. I try and get the highest grade I an afford, but my buying isn't solely based on that. I mostly collect SA Marvels. I like high grade books, but I've found that (for me) the "sweet spot" are books in the 7.5 - 9.0/9.2 range. You can get a really nice book at a fraction of what a 9.4/9.6 would cost you.

The boards are a great community and just an amazing wealth of knowledge exists here. Stick around. As Miraclemet suggested above, find a subforum that lines up with what you like. Be wary of the Golden Age forum though. It's really easy to feel unworthy when you see some of the gems that get posted in there.

Also, as he said, most people here do collect on a budget. Some budgets are larger than others, but we're all fans of the medium. And that's what counts. We're all collectors, but we're all individuals too, so we're all going to collect a little different. No right or wrong way to do it. Ask questions and try and soak up as much info as you can. You'll learn along the way and, if you're like a lot of us, your collecting interests/focus will change.

What are you looking to collect?

This board has every kind of collector and plenty of guys who don't even collect at all.

Welcome to the boards, long time lurker!

Yeah, most of us pretend to be high end collectors but those high end books? They're just clones. I have a Gwen Stacey in my collection. Doesn't everyone?
