Here's the only anti-communist comic in my collection (that I can think of):

lovesecrets.jpg

The story is like this: A young woman gets invited to a club that turns out to be a secret communist club. She falls in love with one of the men there. Even though she doesn't really care about commie stuff, she keeps going to the club because he's such a hunk. But eventually the club leaders ask her to prove her loyalty by destroying government property or something. She is torn -- should she go through with it and betray her country, or should she refuse and jeopardize her love life?

From there the story is a total cop-out. Instead of having to make a tough decision, the man she loves turns out to be an undercover government agent.

What a disappointment. I wanted to see her turn commie.

It has been joked about for years that most of the attendees at these meetings were all govt informants ratting on each other!! lol

There are at least three versions of Two Faces Of Communism.

  • Self-Covered - no slick cover, 16 pages - White hair, yellow "Faces"
  • Self-Covered - no slick cover, 16 pages - Grey hair, orange "Faces"
  • Slick Cover - 20 pages

The self-covered version leaves the last panel of the last page (the back cover) blank. Sometimes they are found imprinted with a promotional message.

The slick covered version includes another story panel on the last story page.

Here's an unused slick cover.

The artist on this and Double Talk is the great PETE COSTANZA, who worked on Captain Marvel, Jimmy Olsen, and the Legion of Superheroes, to name just a few.

From 1962, sorry it's not Gold.

Not quite a comic book. A bunch of round-headed people with their fingers on their lips looking at charts and diagrams. Still worth a look.

Again, sorry it's not Gold. From 1960s, magazine sized, with gorgeous Russ Manning wraparound painted cover and book-length black and white interior art.

Grab one if you can - this is the only copy I've ever seen and it's a great read!

Someone asked about pro-Commie comics.

Closest I've ever seen is this 1941 anti-war Socialist comic. 5 3/4" by 3 1/2".

Black and white throughout. Some grim stuff. Compare this to any of the Timely four color WWII images seen on other threads!

Many years ago, a friend and I ran an ad in a family magazine trying to buy old comic books. We were hoping to pay peanuts to get a goldmine.

We had ONE response.

One little old lady sent us a small box of old comics. All of them were early Topix, very well read. The first picture shows what they looked like. They were all neatly sewn along the length of their spines...

Except for one, hidden and protected in the middle of the stack.

That is SOOOOOO cool. Note that the footnote at the bottom of the first page you posted mentions Fred Schwarz!

I see that Dr. Fred Schwarz passed away earlier this year. His monthly CACC newsletter is still being published though.

Thanks for posting Boot. That is the first time I saw this book with gray hair as being the front cover. You have a pretty nice collection.

Thanks, HD! Coming from you that's a real compliment. The research and amazing items on this thread are part of what finally convinced me to join the boards. That cover of Double Talk is a real treasure. I have a Pete Costanza original cover, too...but it's for a comic promoting kitty litter!

I'll post some other anti-Commie comics soon.

Looking forward to more -- please show us the kitty litter cover! Original and published versions if you have them. Not appropriate here unless it's a red tabby. There's a promo books thread, probably a few pages back.

Thanks for posting.

Here is a book that I recently picked up that falls in the same vein as your purchase. I do not believe this 5x7 giveaway comic is listed in the Overstreet Price Guide. This book came from the personal files of Malcolm Ater, publisher for Commercial Comics.

The H-Bomb And You can be tough to find. Different variants really give a sense of how widely this comic was used.
