9 John Romita Jr. – 846 points (13 first place votes)

8 Frank Miller – 897 points (10 first place votes)

7 John Byrne – 1029 points (11 first place votes)

6 Jim Lee – 1270 points (40 first place votes)

5 Neal Adams – 1296 points (31 first place votes)

4 George Perez – 1877 points (63 first place votes)

3 J.H. Williams III – 1945 points (50 first place votes)

2 Frank Quitely – 2052 points (51 first place votes)

1 Jack Kirby – 2521 points (112 first place votes)

Take it with a grain of salt. Asking CBR who the best illustrators are is like asking MTV viewers who the greatest musicians are. T-Pain and Justin Beiber are sure to make the list.

Apparently, according to CBR, in order to be a good artist you HAVE to draw super heroes.

Very true. Though if you did a poll here I'm sure super-hero artists would dominate as well (though probably not as much). And in no way did I mean to endorse this list as law in any way.

BOOM

McFarlane Byrne

Kieth Kirby

Silvestri

Liefeld Miller

Lee Kane

Larsen Adams

Valentino

Keown & Kubert

Ottley Frazzetta

Jenkins Wrightson

Dragotta Perez

Now you know and knowing is half the battle.

Fixed it. :preach:

+1 I agree with this list.

Fixed

Fixed again.

Why do you keep putting Kane on that list-he could barely draw and hired artists to do most of the stuff-ever seen one of his convention sketches? An 8 year old can draw better.

I'm betting he means Gil, not Bob. :baiting:

Unless criteria is established that everyone can agree on for what qualifies as all time "best" this thread will just be a minefield of meaningless conjecture. (shrug)

Isn't that most of the internet in general? ;)

Objectively, if that is possible, the list MUST include the following...

Frazzeta is a god!

Kirby is a god!

Surprised Robert Crumb has not been mentioned who is also a god!

Wally Wood is, if not a god, right up there.

Eisner is pretty much a god...if you don't know his work you're not eligible to have an opinion here...

I realize for me there are some GA artists that are exceptional and eligible but I do not know there work well enough to espouse it...

All others vie for spots 6-10...

It took me years
It's really impossible for me to judge anyone as an artist if they don't ink their own pencils. I avoid comics with art duties distributed among multiple studio staff. Edited by dupont2005

What I'm saying is, if your product isn't yours start to finish, you're not good at what you do. I could look at half finished and unpublished pieces, but there are countless artists who have complete pieces all from their own hand I could look at and admire.

Well Kirby could and did ink his own stuff from time to time and it was great.

Dang that attitude pretty much nixes any silver age artist from being good and most GA too....
