Where in the world was the Quality Control at CGC???

I got my submission for this year back this week.

The Modern portion (5 books) showed up a few weeks ago. One slab had a very small piece of whatever that black stuff is that’s going into people’s slabs in the back of the slab.  Another slab had a slight scuff on the back of slab. To me that stuff is minor and not worth the risk of CGC really doing some damage on an ME fix.

So I got the Vintage portion (6 books) this week. Three slabs had slight scuffs on the outside on the backs. But two of the slabs had that small crack on the side of the slab that looks like it’s on the inside of the slab. And when you look at the slab head-on it looks like there’s shatter cracking in the seam like when you try and crack a slab.

I think the integrity of the slab is secure but it does have the appearance of someone trying to mess with the slab. Probably going to be a problem if/when I sell them.

So only one submission in a year and only 11 books totally. Not a great ratio.

And no indication on the invoice of which “quality excellence specialist” or whatever inspected this before being shipped out. Guess they gave up on that pretense.

I think CGC will spin that small crack as it is so common now… similar to the invention of “Newton Rings”, this crack will henceforth be referred to as the…

”FRACTURE OF AUTHENTICITY”

…per CGC standard definitions.  Official update to terms coming soon!

Swapped labels.

I'm rarely attracted to Signature Series and signed books, but these, the label swap notwithstanding, are perfect. Good job Roy.

The label swap is interesting. 23 is Red's fist appearance but 24 is her story and an excellent one at that. If only 24 could also be 23....

C'mon CGC. How does this happen? Seriously.

When people submit to you guys, should they think, "I should be ok. There's a big chance that I'll receive a good quality product. There is a smaller, but very real, chance that I'll get absolutely no quality check at all on my product and get back total junk."? Is that what CGC expects their customers to think when they submit?

To be fair, that's exactly how I feel when I go to McDonald's, but that company's apparently worth about $180 billion and usually has a long line of poor-decision-makers ready to hand over their money...

This is NOT what CGC guarantees.  (tsk)

To quote, "The collectible has been inspected by at least two (2) professionals."  Word choice matters, especially when those words are part of a guarantee approved by a corporate attorney.  "Inspect" does not have the same meaning as grade, and a "professional" in CGC's world is not necessarily a grader.  To the best of my knowledge, a CGC principal has never precisely defined what this guarantee actually means.  For example, does one of the "professionals" only count pages and/or check for interior cut-outs during his/her "inspection"?  hm

My understanding of this would be a pre-grader and a finalizer.  :foryou:

I guess CGC witnessed someone doing the restoration?

What I wonder here is if the restoration was only on the outer of the double covers, shouldn't it technically still be a blue label, since the inner cover would still be in its original form. (Granted that the label doesn't indicate which cover was touched up.)

Is this a hole in the back of my 9.8 book, or just some object between the inner and outer case?

It looks like one of the plastic shards since you do see a shadow but it also looks like it has scratched the book as it was moving around.
