JUSTICE LEAGUE: PART ONE (11/17/17)

I'm still worried a bit -- a lot of early Twitter reviews are usually tremendously positive (hyperbolic, really), and these feel like they're straining to say nice things amidst a horde of problems with the story, villain, pace, CGI, etc.  When the general consensus is, "can't wait for the next one to see where this is going", there's probably some real issues with the film at hand.

Feels like a 40-60% RT score overall, but I'm still eager to see how they handle these characters' interactions.  Any step up from BVS and SS will be welcome.

I liked BvS,and Suicide Squad. I loved Wonder Woman.

So I am betting it will be in the middle of those. I am pretty sure it will beat Inhumans and FF reboot.

These are the actual critics that were given an early screening. The comments posted came from sites like CBR, Screenrant, Collider, Mashable and other sites. But it will be interesting to see what critic score they assign to JL.

I think it will fall between 40-55% on RT. So "rotten," but only just.

Why?

Putting aside my biases (that BvS and Suicide Squad sucked and the early Snyder-driven trailers for this made it look like garbage) it's:

Because of this mashable piece, which makes the short embargo argument, charting it against other recent would-be blockbusters:

Lifting the embargo 1 day, 16 hours before the first public screenings is not a vote of confidence from the studio.

That's a far cry from the 13+ days given Wonder Woman and Logan, and ranks it just above Valerian and The Mummy.

Likewise, that the embargo lifts just before 3:00 am. If Warner Bros. were confident, they'd give it at least a few more days for early positive reviews to help sway public opinion.

As it stands, this looks like the opposite -- relying on a huge opening weekend before public opinion settles in and it drops 70%+ the next weekend.

Also, noting that "if you liked BvS and Suicide Squad you'll like this" is the very definition of "damning with faint praise"

Most probably this comment comes from the realization there are those that hate these movies, and want to do nothing more than repeatedly voice their hate. Since the same Mashables article gets referenced four times now...

"People actively rooting for it to fail."

"People want to actively hate it - 'You hate it - I hate it too! Let's hate it together'. "

So if people either found a middle-ground with either BvS or Suicide Squad, this gets called out as a reference point to help the haters to relate.

I will think this will get fresh but just barely, so it needs to clear 60%.

Does anyone know how critics are chosen for early screenings?  Is it random or do they allow people more likely to be favorable go first?

I didn't realize how far in advance both WB and Fox gave their first public screenings of WW and Logan. Was it because of high confidence that both knew WW and Logan were going to be good? This short embargo on JL has now got me thinking why did WB lift the embargo 13 days  for Wonder Woman compared to just the 1 day and 16 hours for JLA? hm

My point.

The embargo metrics don't lie.

Even Interstellar -- which had one of the most interesting surprises of modern times, lifted its embargo more than 3.5 days in advance, and even then critics were under a very specific NDA regarding the surprise.

I don't think Warner Bros. execs are dumb - this is damage control.

Good press is the sole reason you lift an embargho early.  Thor and WW are great recent examples.  B it were movies with a lot of questions around them.  The reviews looked good so the allowed release, and the movie ride good world of mouth to big openings.  Why deny a movie that wave if it exists.  I do not think JL is going to get univer Sally panned.  Still getting about a 60 oN RT, but thinking reviews are mixed and menrion overall a good but flawed movie.

With all of the behind the scenes drama, I'm glad it sounds like it turned out as well as it did. I'm also thrilled that Danny Elfman scored the film and uses his iconic Batman theme for the Dark Knight. Can't wait until Friday.

Yeah I heard the classic theme in the trailer.  Really sounded great.

I think WB is making a mistake holding back on the final critic reviews. The social media feedback from the reporting sites is more positive than negative. So worst-case, the critic reviews calling out the same details, and the RT average turns out to be 6.5/10.0 for the rating average and 60% or better on the RT average. A heck of a lot better than when Batman v Superman ended up with a 4.9/10.0 detailed average rating.

We'll know soon enough what that score is going to be.

There was no behind-the-scenes drama with this one compared to Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad. And with that latter, it turned out WB taking the final movie away from David Ayer to have a trailer media specialist complete the final packaging. Those had drama.

Unfortunately, this had the loss to the Snyder family leading to him taking time off to help them through a horrible situation. Luckily, they had a capable stand-in already engaged.

*SPOILER* On Huge Moment With *SPOILER* & The Team And Why They Can't Exist Without Him

Spoiler

Superman_11.jpg

In a new interview, Henry Cavill has discussed his return as the Man of Steel and quite possibly spoiled the moment the hero first meets up with the iconic team.

"It's very, very surreal. This is a wonderful job. I love my job, especially when I'm playing Superman, but sometimes you do start to feel the wear and tear of a long day. There was one point where I was standing in one of the huge green screen sets - which can be quite draining in itself, because it's a very bright, aggressive green - and I was standing there at the top of these big stairs, thinking how hungry I am, and looking forward to getting to bed...and then I had this moment when I suddenly realised that Cyborg, Aquaman, and Wonder Woman were all standing there, and it looked so fantastic. All of a sudden, my tiredness slipped away. I wasn't hungry any more. I just wanted to live in this moment and remember that I'm doing the thing that I wanted to do as a kid. I'm essentially playing Super Heroes, but as real as it gets as an adult. I'm very thankful for that kind of thing."

As for what iteration of Superman we're getting here, Cavill said "Geoff [Johns] and I have been delving into the history of the character to get to the core of who Superman is," before adding: "This is the first time we see the true Superman. The Superman who is confident, and sure, and full of hope and joy." That latter remark is definitely one which will please a lot of comic book fans!

As for how the Man of Steel fits into the team, Cavill made it clear that there's no Justice League without Superman. "It's much like the United States with the League of Nations. Without that keystone, the Justice League doesn't really work. It's still a fantastic group of people, but Superman tends to be the heavy hitter of the League. He sometimes takes a leadership role, but most of the time it's Batman who takes a leadership role. Superman is more the moral compass for the League."

Ben Affleck Reveals What Happens When Three Mother Boxes Combine And Possible Sequel Plans

Quote

In a new interview, Ben Affleck was asked to explain what exactly a Mother Box is and said, "A Mother Box is an all-powerful, indestructible, technological cube that can also teleport a bunch of aliens to Earth from another world." As for why Steppenwolf wants them, it turns out that the three need to be brought together to take over a planet and that process is reportedly known here as "the Unity."

"Once you combine the three Mother Boxes they form what's called the Unity," the actor reveals, "a force that is pure power used to conquer worlds. Fortunately, these things don't exist in real life, of course, but they're a part of the DC Universe, and a problem for the Justice League."

Affleck's future as the Caped Crusader isn't clear but when he was asked about where the Justice League franchise could go next, he did share some vague ideas! "Now the Justice League is together, we have these stories that we can finally tell without being encumbered with setting up the backstory. We've done all that, so now we get to enjoy the adventures of this group of heroes as they take on the world."
