“A lifelong respected Ravager, Stakar isn’t fond of Yondu. Sylvester Stallone offers the character’s backstory: “Stakar had banished Yondu many years earlier for doing something wrong and he finally sees him almost twenty years later at this particular establishment called the Iron Lotus where all of the Ravagers go to blow off steam. And then we have a confrontation which is pretty intense and it’s kind of a father/son type of thing and now he’s going to have to pay the piper. His karma has come back ten-fold.”

If the name Stakar sounds familiar to you, don’t worry - it is meant to. In the comics, Stakar is better known as Starhawk, and he is a major player in the intergalactic series. The cosmic character helped form the Guardians in the 31st century, and he is the son of heroes Quasar and Kismet. Formerly a member of the Reavers of Arcturus, Starhawk is known as a sort of antihero who teams up with his sister-turned-lover Aleta Ogord.

Kind of a glut of comics media dulling the impact, I guess? People getting used to everything being adapted?

Yes so its not the hype it used to be which is why speculators are flocking to independent titles with low print runs as well as manufactured variants with print runs under 1-3K.

They get in early contact the publishers/writers and then hype its like the next coming. I am not slamming them because it does take work to do this. I just don't think its a sustainable model, but that's just me.

But, its why I shy away from new ind books now unless I actually read it and see sales. Its become a new form of gambling in my opinion. Kudos to those that are successful  with it. But when you got to shows you see the books sitting there that were misses or with prices that were so high because they paid thru the nose to get it to begin with.

I picked up a couple of the Viv Vision cover for All-New Wolverine. Was that a 1:1? I got Adams to sign them at FXD and they are at CGC now. Great cover.

Yeah, I ordered this one. I missed out on the X-23 #1 1:75 Djurdjevic variant and the price is high on it now. Love that cover.

Yes, I'm pretty sure it was a 1:1 with an order % increase of a previous release.

Pardon my ignorance, but why are these books going to heat up?

At this point in the hobby, it seems as though people are collecting first appearances.  Other attributes that once were important to a book's value (remember when Neal Adams covers were demanding a premium?) are greatly diminished... so what's special about these books, other than the fact that they are really nice covers?

Huh? Cover art is one of the primary generators of Modern value.

Oh, and Neal Adams Batman books have gone through the roof the last two years.

Basically, some people will tell you that the emergence of slabs raised the prominence of cover art to such a level that it no longer matters (as much / at all - various opinions here) what happens between the pages. Since a book is slabbed anyway, you can't read it, but you can still see the cover, and therefore, rarity is more important than the old fashioned concept of what makes a book a key.

I've not noticed cover art generating any sustainable value/demand... Can you name a couple books for me that are demonstrating cover art as a value driver?

And Neal Adams Batman books have seen a bump in recent years, but his other (often more impressive, IMO) work?  Not so much.

There's a book from 2002 that is the long term value example (for a modern), and then people point to the fact that certain artists covers have always been in demand.

The explanation is technically correct, but shallow - it doesn't even attempt to describe the very inflated values. Typically people just reference 'supply and demand' if you start questioning why one of these books goes for $2,000 - $5,000. It certainly is an interesting niche in the market, with the most interesting aspect being whether or not this is a dead end path in comic collecting, or whether it is the new normal going forward... the group of individuals actively participating (read: buying modern variants for thousands of dollars) seem to be very small, but it is quite difficult to tell anything with any accuracy.
