This just arrived in the mail: Science Comics #1 from January 1946. This would have been on the stands just a few months after the end of the war and is the first depiction of a mushroom cloud over Hiroshima cover that I’m aware of.

Action 101 hit the stands earlier, although the cover indicates it's showing a bomb test rather than a depiction of the bombing of Japan.

Science 1 was cover dated January of 1946 and was on the stand in October of 1945. Action 101 didn't come along until much later with a cover date of October 1946 which would have put it on stands in August. Unless I'm missing something...

Over at the site celebrating Jack Bradbury's Comic Art, http://jbrad.org/index.html , the host posted correspondence Bradbury kept with Standard / Better in the period 1948 to 1951.

These are interesting reads re: directions given to the artist including art direction, pay scale, job line-ups, cover design, etc. In all, they paint a vivid picture through these memos of the predicament of free-lancers in the comics market at the time. From the uncertainty if the book Bradbury started with Standard will survive to the competition from others from the Disney diaspora to the seasonal fortunes of the publisher, free-lancing was and remains a tough gig to handle.

The memos are posted here - http://jbrad.org/spgm2/index.php?spgmGal=Letters They are an easy read and are conveniently laid out in chronological order.

And here's an example regarding layouts and art-style -

Here's one where the diktat is that the main character should be on the left side for better display on the newsstands -

… and the final panel, a tinge more overtly moralistic than usual for these stories -

It's been a while since any Jesse Marsh art has been posted.

Hate to say it, but Marsh is my least favorite GA artist.  Or maybe I should say least favorite among the well-known GA artists.

It's easy to know that you're not alone; most people have the same reaction to Marsh's art: disinterest and dislike. I'll soldier on though

The line drawn front and back cover are probably by Gollub.

I am favorably disposed to Marsh's art, but will admit that he was inconsistent. I'm enjoying the scans you post.
