Berkeley Comic Con Aug. 7 plus board meet-up. Comics only show!

159 posts in this topic

Tim (Wormboy) and I are putting on a small comics-only show near downtown Berkeley on Sunday, August 7. We are also providing a table for board members to hang out, meet, network, etc. I'm hoping we can get 20+ board members there. (The venue has a lot of chairs!)

Shin (sckao) knocked it out of the park with the website:

http://www.berkeleycomiccon.com/

This is an old school show. Inexpensive tables and admission and all about the comics, old and new. The website has more about the whole vibe. The site also has a wantlist feature where we pass the requests on to the dealers in advance so they will bring what people want.

Please check out my thread in comics general about what you'd like to see in a show like this. All suggestions welcomed.

Hoping this can grow into a regular event for Bay Area comic collectors and that maybe we can start having some board member activities around it to that might encourage some people to travel here as well.

We're going to see how the first one goes. The local con calendar is getting slightly crowded but there's a need for this kind of specialty show. I did check earlier this week and the site is at least somewhat responsive (as the term goes) so it should still view ok on phones but maybe not optimally.

Marc,

Nice website so far. In the future, I recommend that the site layout be optimized for viewing on smart phones.

Do you plan to run this comic-centric con 2 <3 or 3 times a year? :hi:

What are you referring to specifically? If you have a tiny screen, it might be a problem since some of the header graphics don't resize. (I have an iPhone 6 Plus.) I can easily fix that... but c'mon... this is a five hour show that I heard about last week.

The theme is totally responsive in that if it detects that the platform (the phone) has a certain resolution, it will go from two columns to one column so no horizontal scrolling is needed. This is for optimal reading at the expense of layout.

Some graphics could be resized when this happens as well to make it prettier and the main Navigation Bar could be replaced with a nicer button based single column. These are all design tweaks that we'll make as time goes by I guess. Right now, it was more important to get a quick and dirty website up. (I'll see what I can do though.)

(Marc sent me a Canadian example that had no responsive design elements at all so I don't think we're talking about the same thing...)

Appreciating the incredible response I'm getting from the locals (and some not so local) about this show. People are hungry for this thing. I do hope we can get at least 20 board members together for this as well.

Hope this show knocks it out of the park Marc.

Thank you so much for this. Just a few questions. Where can one get something

to eat? Where can one park (that is relatively close) ? And Coffee. Thanks.

Remember, this is an evolved con. All those questions are answered on the website in the amenities section, under directions. :)

Coffee is 1-2 blocks away. There are blocks of restaurants all around (remember, this is essentially in downtown Berkeley), a restaurant also across the street, and a Trader Joe's a block away.

Hiya Ray,

True, so many great reasons to visit Berkeley. Also, this town has a great comics history (including the discovery of the Reilly pedigree) so I am hoping to build on that.

Hi Marc! :hi:

The convention is mere blocks from the fabulous Berkeley Gourmet Ghetto. There are many restaurants on Shattuck ranging from McDonalds to Chez Panisse.

Shin we really appreciate you building the web site! It looks great, especially for our little bootstrap old school comic book show.

You're a pro man - no worries. Thanks again.

The Brain! I remember you from back in the day at Flying Colors, right?

There's decent street parking, and a parking garage across the street. more info on the site.

As far as food and coffee, as was mentioned earlier, the options are many. I will put together a list of good spots within walking distance and print it out for you (And anyone else) and bring it to the show.
