Scrooge
Owen Fitzgerald drew the feature for ACG, and probably for Standard. Was Standard a precursor company to ACG? No, but they were blood relations. Ned Pines, the publisher of Pines = Standard = Better = Nedor got his artwork from the Sangor shop run by B.W. Sangor, his father-in-law. Frederick Iger, the ACG publisher after Sangor's death, was Sangor's business manager. (I'm skipping their relationship with Donenfeld here). When Standard started to decrease the amount of work it ordered from the Sangor shop, ACG's schedule picked up. So Fitzgerald was really working for the Sangor shop all along but his work ended being published by different houses. As for the jump of the character from one publisher to the other, I guess nobody really cared. Wasn't there a publishing gap between the appearance of Moronica at Standard and her appearances at ACG? That would certainly have helped the transfer.
lotemo
The Dizzy Dames comics are great. I've never seen those anywhere.
lotemo
Finally... I got a copy of this issue. My favorite Millie cover on Joker Comics. From 1947-1948. I love the black cover background. The Marvel artists made great use of black backgrounds. It makes the colors jump out. It's also a rather risque cover. It looks like a cover gag that Marvel may have stolen from one of their adult magazines. With the black cover, I really wanted a copy with no color breaks. This copy looks nicer than the scan. This completes my Millie/Joker run also which makes it an especially nice add.
FlyingDonut
That's an AWESOME cover. I guess I'll have to add something to my want list now. Somebody post a Millie 2, just to taunt me.
selegue
Great-looking book. Are the "headlights" on the couch arms a visual gag? Any idea who drew the cover? Jack ... Kakapo
Great-looking book. Are the "headlights" on the couch arms a visual gag? Any idea who drew the cover? Jack Well, whoever it was, it looks like they drew issues 26-34, with Basil Wolverton doing most (all?) of the earlier issues. 36 could be the same artist, 37 definitely isn't, 38 might be. http://www.comics.org/covers.lasso?SeriesID=298 I thought it might have been Bill Ward for a second, but Millie's bust is only half the size he would have drawn it. It's annoying me because I'm sure I've seen that style before, but I can't think of the guy's name... I repeat my astonishment that a character was named Flicker, what with the old LI = U equation. Oh, and I just noticed, apparently the extra "of" hadn't yet crept into sentences like "take these handcuffs off (of) me". See how much comics can teach us? Nellie the Nurse 12-16 look like the same artist: http://www.comics.org/covers.lasso?SeriesID=418 This is the Millie 2 scan at the GCD: http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=111445&zoom=4 Looks like our mystery artist again! Although Millie has more makeup on in the Joker 30 cover...
lotemo
Wasn't Mike Sekowskey one of the regular cover artists back then? I thought he did a number of Millies. I thought it could be him. The Atlas Tales database doesn't have a cover credit for this issue.
Kakapo
Wikipedia, that font of all truth in the world, does indeed say: Sekowsky began working in the comics medium in 1941, as an artist at Timely Comics in New York City. There, he was initially employed on various humor features such as "Ziggy Pig and Silly Seal". No mention of Millie, although obviously it was a humour title, so maybe. Sekowsky's 1960s work is so notorious that it has honestly never occurred to me that he might have done anything good. He's better than Frank Robbins, but not by all that much.
