I'm curious... what category would you put an unpublished illustration in. It's not a commission, as I didn't ask them to do it. And it isn't a con sketch, since it is a fully rendered piece. So, would that put it in the "other" category?

There aren't set rules, but If it was mine I would put it in commission. That category isn't about pieces you commissioned yourself, just like con sketches aren't for sketches you got yourself personally. But you could also put it in other, or even covers if it was cover quality (since covers include unpublished covers)

Flash vs. Zoom commission - Scott Kolins (Published/Unpublished: Commissions)

The Johns/Kolins run on Flash is a personal favorite, with the highlight being the introduction of Zoom. No matter what Johns has done in subsequent years to relegate Wally to second-tier status, he'll always be "my" Flash. When I contacted Scott about doing a commission, there was really only one choice of subject matter in my mind.

As the owner of the Flash 323 cover (Flash vs. Reverse Flash), I have to say this is a gorgeous commission by one of my favorite Flash artists.

I have often thought about getting commissions done reinterpreting my all-time favorite cover, but never acted on it. I'm glad to see the Flash vs. Flash theme done perfectly here by Kolins.

Here's my Top 5 picks from my 2016 art year:

http://www.comicartfans.com/mylowry.asp?gsub=951

I was blessed to have a very good year. I discovered a huge load of unseen-in-30-years art, finally landed my grail, added a Joe Kubert Hawkman cover and a Star Wars pinup, got a few Harvey covers, a Carmine Infantino Flash cover and a lot of pages from comics I loved as a child.

2016 was probably my biggest year since I first started collecting.

You can see my entire 2016 haul (well, what hasn't been traded or sold already) by clicking here:

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerydetailsearch.asp?gcat=3650&Yr=2016&pm=1π=18&order=Date

I also had some struggles, particularly with a dealer who was (he admitted to me) very jealous of my Ohio art discovery and who I let burn me twice this year because of what I thought was a longtime friendship. They say no good deed goes unpunished and that old saying is absolutely correct; my "friend" wasn't so much worried about our friendship as he was guilting me into giving him two really great, lopsided (for him) deals. It was the ugly side of our hobby that nearly caused me to quit collecting altogether and led me to consider taking down my CAF gallery. But, I pushed through the nastiness and came out the other side a better person, a better collector and more focused than ever to build the best collection I can possibly put together.

Again, as in all the years past, I thank God for blessing me with so much great original, comic book art.

Thanks everyone for looking and I hope we all have a great 2017!

Who could forget the great post about the acquisition of your Cheryl Blossom pinup grail?

It took me a decade to get the previous owner to even talk to me about selling it. Then, when I did get him to talk to me about it, it was a task convincing him I wasn't trying to scam him (he even thought my cash would be counterfeit and asked me to drive from West Virginia to Savannah, Ga., to pay for the art -- but even then, he wasn't sure if he could trust the cash not to be counterfeit. Yikes!). After we started talking, I worked on it for weeks before we came to an agreement.

The previous owner said he had people try to buy it from him all the time, but most offers were offensively low. I had made offers each year, increasing the amounts with each email, but he never would reply -- until this year. I couldn't figure why, unless he really, really loved that pinup.

Afterwards, I learned that because of his distrust for me and nearly everyone else, he hadn't read any of the emails I had sent him each year after the first one or else I might have gotten it a couple of years earlier and for a grand cheaper!

But, thank God I was able to convince him I was sincere and wasn't trying to scam him and that we made the deal. We actually became somewhat friendly with each other (he's really a nice guy, but was just convinced that everyone who wanted to buy the piece was trying to scam him) and he was happy with the high-quality print I made for him of the pinup and he was happy to know the original art has a good home.

Finally had a chance to go through the 2016 purchases.

no PREACHER entries this year

Didn't you just submit one to the Lowry for contention? Late pickup?

I thought I had my top 5 picked out, but I made an executive last minute decision to change it. :shy:

Good choice!

Here's my Old School 2016 Lowry - Nothing newer than the early 1970s (but all new to me.)

Here's the year, overall. I checked a few boxes with nice examples by some artists I was missing.

Okay, so I picked out my five top pieces of the year. You can see them here:

http://www.comicartfans.com/mylowry.asp?gsub=3374

Assassins #1, page 1 - DC/Marvel Amalgam - (1996): A fun and "energetic" image, from the biggest intercompany crossover event of all-time, that also homages a classic moment in comic history. All that, and art stylings by Scott McDaniel, too. Who wouldn't have picked this?

Cloak & Dagger: Between Darkness and Light (2015): A beautiful and emotional image, that is a prefect representation of the characters. And done by one of the artists who has more than a passing familiarity with them. Certainly one of the best pieces I've ever seen by Mike Vosburg, to be sure!

Fantastic Four #321, page 13 - Hulk vs. Thing - (1988): It's the Spiky Thing. It's the Grey Hulk. It's classic superhero slugfest action. And it's by Ron Lim. What more does anybody need to say, that it makes it clear it's certainly among the best?

Vampirella: Baby Got Bat (2009): A sexy piece, that doesn't lower itself into crassness to be so, by an artist who isn't well-known for this type of thing. Sometimes greatness comes from where you least expect it! This piece epitomizes that.

Web of Spider-Man #15, page 11 - 1st App. of Chance - (1986): A page from the 1st appearance of one of my favorite Z-list villains? How could I not pick this?

Honorable mentions:

Detective Comics #599, page 22 - Blind Justice Part 2: Bruce Wayne Gets Shot - (1989) : A page with Batman getting shot up is not your every day event. The fact it is tied into his 50th Anniversary storyline, also makes this one something special.

Excalibur: Air Apparent, page 20 (1991) : A gorgeous splash page, by one of my favorite underrated artists. Guice displays all the things that make his work so mesmerizing and notable.

The New Shadowhawk #6 Cover (1996) : It's rare for a published cover to not make someone's cut for the "best of" selections. But while this one is just such an example of that, that doesn't take away from the great visual trick of showing more while doing less.

Hope you enjoy them, everyone! :)

Not a big year for me as far as spectacular buys go, no large purchases this year, but I did pick up a few pieces that I really like. Entire Top 5 can be seen here:

http://www.comicartfans.com/MyLowry.asp?GSub=442

Sitting all alone (by a mile for me) this year is the Dean Yeagle commission I was able to acquire back in April/May. Mandy attempting to cosplay as Valkyrie, with Scoots helping out. Absolutely love how this one turned out! (Not Work Safe).

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=8618

Picked up a good amount of Valkyrie pieces this year, including a few commissions/con sketches and some Paul Pelletier pencilled original pages as well. These 2 are my favourites of the bunch:

Valkyrie by Eddy Barrows:

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=8614

Valkyrie by Nat Jones:

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=8617

Took advantage of Spencer's sale last year (didn't receive the piece until a few months into 2016), and picked up a nice Tom Raney splash page from the Secret Invasion: Inhumans mini-series featuring Medusa.

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=8616

And finally, came across this little cover to a promo comic that was pencilled by Tom Grummett that featured the Guardians of the Galaxy. Pleasant surprise while rooting through art piles at a smaller comic con.

Thanks for looking, and I look forward to seeing what everybody else enters this year!
