I've enjoyed the first four episodes greatly,,,,,,, the fourth was spectacular! I'm trying to watch slowly and not tear through them too fast. I tried to get my wife to watch with me,,,, she was unimpressed with the first episode,,,,,,, even with my explinations,,,,,,ah well,,,,,,, she just doesn't get it,,,,,,,

I actually found it difficult to get through the first episode.  I'll keep watching, and I imagine things will liven up quite a bit once Death and Matthew the Raven appear on the scene.  After all, Dream is intentionally a monotonous, unsympathetic protagonist, so he needs someone there to react to his oh-so-straight man schtick.

The other problem is the comic is really about storytelling itself.  And film-- even moreso than comics-- is the show, don't tell medium.  Hard to imagine this series will do more visually for the dreamscape than movies like Inception have done. So we're left with the more cerebral and/or verbal approach, which can be hard to translate to film.

OK up through episode 5 now, and as anticipated the show picks up steam as they introduce the strong supporting cast:

- I thought I recognized Cain underneath that makeup as the actor who played opposite Nicola Walker in the "Unforgotten" British TV series (a favorite).  The actor's name is Sanjeev Bhaskar, and I hope they find more for him to do as the show continues.
- Constantine certainly spiced up episode 3!
- The duel with Lucifer didn't really work for me.  I don't have a problem with the casting, I just didn't find the combination of menace, nobility and ambiguous motives that I think the character needed.
- I found John Dee to be a much more interesting villain than the Burgesses from episode 1.
- Glad to see them hitting some of the themes I was looking for, e.g. in episode 5 the point about the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves:  Are they  "lies," or are they our dreams that keep us going through life?

Looking forward to meeting Death next!

Watched the first two episodes. It's solid and I'm onboard so far, but the critic from Vulture speaks my mind:

"Not gonna lie, I’m getting a little impatient with this show already. The Sandman appears to be going at an adaptation rate of one issue per episode, and we do not have time for this. Netflix cancels shows too fast — get to hell already, please."

Especially because (as noted earlier in this thread) my favorite issues begin at # 10.

I don't understand how there could be all that death within like a 5 block radius... I'd hate to live in that zip code.:baiting:

It's London, it would be postcode :baiting:

And there'd have bee more than one :ohnoez:

Wait until you get through 6.

Now that was top entertainment. Such good TV.

Just finished episode 6. Amazing.

It looks like some of the MSM critics are not enjoying it as much as we are. They need to read the comics I guess. lol

I actually got a little teary about some of what was being conveyed about life, and being shown off to the next life.

To say this is not honoring Neil Gaiman's written works is missing out on some fantastic performances.

With the show I figured out what worked about Death in the comic books.

We have this character, who from first assessments is the most powerful being there is, and yet she was portrayed as this non-powerful, non-spriritual person.   She was this goth girl, a persona reserved for those trying to escape life as we know, irreverent and carefree.    The actress in the show gets close to that, and thats why we've had some wonderfully poignant scene's, as she goes about her work.

Not sure if anyone else was doing this, but I have read Sandman so many times in my youth, that I started saying the character's lines before they would speak it. After a few episodes, I noticed the dialogue was almost exactly as the comic, if not damn near close. Normally, I would say this makes it predictable, but Sandman is basically near perfect, so why change a lot of the writing?

True it's not a straight adaptation, but many of the key scenes, the dialogue is lifted right from the comics. I guess they feel they couldn't improve on perfection.
