Superheroes and horror aren’t the only game in town anymore at the pandemic-era box office.

In a promising sign for the summer box office, Paramount and Skydance’s Top Gun: Maverick scored the best Memorial Day opening of all time with a projected three-day domestic haul of $124 million and $151 million for the four days. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End was the previous record holder with a Friday-Monday treasure chest of $139 million, according to Comscore.

The film started off with a massive $51.8 million on Friday — including $19.3 million in previews — as it opened in more than 4,700 theaters in North America.

Maverick‘s launch is also a career best for Tom Cruise, and is the first time he has had a film open to $100 million or more.

question becomes: how high does it fly? 3x opening weekend given A+ Cinemascore seems likely. If Jurassic has no teeth, $400M+ US would be in reach.

Betting this one has legs.  With the A+ CinemaScore, likely excellent word of mouth, and highly rewatchable.  It is also a more rewatchable length then The Batman coming in at just over 2 hrs.

Luis seems to like comparing everything to the batman.

Guess he forgot to mention this cost 80 million less than that to produce and just made the same amount of money opening weekend, with no China, and a far superior domestic.

They both did around $124M openings. That's the comparison.

Do you think a TopGun 3 will be in the works once Hollywood sees the numbers it did over the weekend? LOL

You know there will be a new franchise expanded including potential spin-off projects. It's the Hollywood way nowadays.

It's a great film.  You would be amazed at the number of friends I speak to that planned to stream this in lieu of going to the theatre.  Based on the good reviews, many plan to see it in the next couple of weeks!

You are certainly entitled to your opinion even tho it’s wrong. :headpat:
