How much it tracks the original film.  Like, plot point to plot point to plot point.  Scene for scene. Beat for emotional beat.  Often using virtually identical shots.  You are not wrong to say it did not need to be made, in the sense that it was going to tell a new story.  But, then again, does any movie really need to be made?

Love this movie and can't wait to see it again. Wasn't alive when the 1st was made but watched it later. Now if they could make some of the other 80s movie as good as this one that would be amazing.

Holy cannoli! That was the best action movie I can remember seeing in a long time. My hands were clenched almost the whole last 1/3.

I saw this today with my wife, son and daughter. They loved it.. They said it was a normal life movie. Something they could relate too. Real life. I said you don't like the super hero movies anymore? They said we like them, but TOM CRUISE more interesting. I THINK the worm has turned.

I give it an 8.5, strong on nostalgia, could 

have a little more on character development.

After  thought:

Jennifer Connelly is aging  beautifully.
