Hey, Brian.  :hi:  I regard issue #52 as one of the "generic" issues with only average collector appeal.  There was a time when issues #52 and #80 (the wash-tone "space poker" cover by Gil Kane) were mildly hot.  This transient "flavor-of-the-month" hotness brought a ton of copies out of the woodwork.  Market values (and therefore CGC submissions) dropped once supply exceeded demand and it became clear that neither issue is rare.

Issue #51 is a bit different.  It is one of the scarcer issues (similar in quantity to issue #21, the Murphy Anderson  "Monster that Fished for Men" cover).  However, the multiple folks are willing to pay for issues #21 and #51 are way less than those associated with issues #50, 54, and 79.  CGC Census counts are a much greater reflection of value than scarcity.  Just compare the census data for ASM #300 with the data for ASM #295-297 and/or #302-305:

I'm going to have to disagree on #52.  I may not be the average collector, but that book is in my top 8 favorite SA covers, which would be 9, 21, 23, 50, 51, 52, 79, and 110, and a 9th fav would be 56.  I think #54 has much less appeal as far as the cover goes, but the scarcity of it makes it desirable to me.

I agree with you. I think that’s a great cover.

Issue #52 definitely has an eye-catching cover.  Heck, I like hot pink as much as the next guy.  But your original question was why do issues #51 and 52 have so few graded copies, and I will stand by my previous assertion that the number of CGC submissions (and certifications) is primarily driven by value as opposed to scarcity.  Buyers are willing to pony up big bucks for issues #50 (the Murphy Anderson robot cover) and #79 (the crazy Gil Kane alien snowmen cover), so more of those issues will be submitted to CGC.  And, when you examine the census data shown below, you'll see that the difference in census count is really due to differences in the sub-6.0 range (where there are only 2 slabbed copies of issue #52, but 18 copies and 19 copies of issues #50 and #79, respectively).

To repeat, the number of CGC submissions (and certifications) is primarily driven by value as opposed to scarcity.  :sumo:  :hi:

Can upgrade the #12 and #110 in an upcoming Heritage auction. And yeah awesome stuff! Also the #143 always reminds me of Carrot Top 🤣

Me too...but only in lower grade...(slightly lower than yours).  The problem with this cover is that it's so unbelievable, as opposed to all the others...lol

No no, not my copy. Just found one online as an example. I tried winning a really nice one on eBay a year or so ago, but went for more than I wanted to spend.

Did somebody say gorilla covers?  Apparently, gorillas sold books, so Julius Schwartz loved 'em.  Indeed, you'll find 'em on the covers of just about every DC title.  My personal faves are issues #64 and 69.  :luhv:

I sold my #64 CGC 8.5 on C-Link and it certainly went for a pretty penny. I'd say also my favorite two issues.
