Love this Driben golfer on the bottom (and I like the Quintanas, too).  I can't recall which magazine exactly it was that a friend told me (Movie Humor or Movie-Merry-Go-Round) that Quintana was doing covers for where George Delacorte at Film Fun straight out threatened a lawsuit over the copying of Enoch Bolles by Quintana, but I don't think the threat had much effect.  The curvy black background thing in both of those is definitely a Bolles thang.

This one I noticed when I was looking for the swipe on the top one (which I can't find but think exists) has gotta at least be partly inspired by the motorcycle cop you posted recently, pretty much the same outfit:

I took a little closer look at Gay Book Magazine.  Some of the things about it don't quite get me as jazzed as more traditional girlie pulps, but, damn, those covers are fantastic.  The Bolles there from 34 is underappreciated, and he did a couple of other great ones, too, before Bergey took over.   But then Bergey takes over a does some of the most interesting work in his career.  I worked with this one today but quickly as I intend to a find the right copy for myself:

Gay Book Magazine 1938-08 cover Earle Bergey (MCS Darwin Edit)

I've shown this one before but also a classic in a similar vibe from the same period

Then there's this one:

Gay Book Magazine 1937-03 cover Earle Bergey (MCS Darwin Edit)

What compelled this magazine to jump to photocovers in it's dying breath, I do not know :insane:

Wynne Davies, Collectron's got a nice "tanline" one up there from Paris Nights by him, too.

Same cover reprinted on one of the late 30s titles from Eagle/Consolidated that tended to reprint covers from Paris Nights and which were often sold in second hand bookstores as the censors began to crack down on "obscenity" at the newsstand.  Actually not a bad reprinting, sometimes these could get grisly as far as being out of register, etc.

I sadly do not own any, but Davies also did some nice work for the Shades on titles like True Gang, Murder Mysteries and Detective and Murder Mysteries and the "Scarlet" titles - Scarlet Gang Smashers, Scarlet Gang Stories, Scarlet Adventuress, Scarlett Confessions - don't think I'm missing any titles there lol.  Not from my collection (and not girlie pulps) but some sampleage - I need to index these and track down better images for all these titles:

I think I've posted this one before but it's necessary for the next image

From my eBay emails today.  No, Britain, just no.

UK pulp reprints are so varied.  Some were arranged, some pirated.  There's an old story that remaindered pulps were used as ship ballast for the trip over and then re-covered.  That ain't the original contents page right there, tho -
