High-grade copies of Aliens #1 aren't exactly rare, but the 9.8s are pretty tough to chase down.

Not really since there's now something like 79 equivalent CGC 9.8 graded copies out there already and counting:  hm

Modern Age (1980-Present):Science Fiction, Aliens #1 (Dark Horse, 1988) CGC NM/MT 9.8 White pages....

And absolutely no problem at all if you are willing to open up your wallet nice and wide to fish out $7,500 to acquire your copy.  :takeit:  :screwy:

I'll basically re-cap my post from the CG thread: this is beyond wacky. Copies hit $3500-$4k range during pandemic, but had settled around $2k-$2500 recently. However, there is a new feature film currently shooting, and a new series heading to FX. So, the property is going to be in the spotlight again shortly, which could explain FOMO as some collectors try to get this in their collection before the brand is newly relevant. That being said, smells like shilling to me. A $4-$5k jump like that...it just doesn't sit right. Not impossible, but...I don't see it. And I saw that as a fan who would love to see his 9.8 set continue to climb!

A copy of #2 just closed at $2051, which is also an all-time high, I believe. However, that's only in comparison to previous highs around $1800, so it's not a crazy jump like the #1 saw.

As a general rule, I don't sell my Aliens books. But if these things get stupid...hrm...

 Sell em to me! It would have to be cash plus trade but no worries cause I'm gripped up with goodies to trade. I got a chicken salad sandwich with only a single bite out of it, 7 blue marbles, a 4 dvd box set of Discovery channel animal porn, a leather fly swatter, a latex monkey mask and a rubber chicken. :insane:

Hrm, you drive a hard bargain! But seeing as how I'm looking for red marbles instead of blue, for this reason I am out.

I did not think the $7,500 April sale for #1 was gonna stick, but, uh, another 9.8 just sold on eBay for $6,980.

Also, interestingly (and perhaps telling about the difficulty of the book in the grade), no new 9.8’s added to the census since that April 1st sale. Still, 20-25x the price of a 9.6 seems kinda crazy…

that's just not a good place to put your money.   Probably a very small pool of dedicated people at the 9.8 level and nothing more.    Hard to imagine them going up more and easy to imagine them falling.

I agree, but I thought that at $2750... Now that may be 30-40% below eventual bottom?

Yeah I feel like this is bound to dip but probably won't see it until another one goes up for auction (the recent one was buy-it-now). Still, it was selling solid over $2500 for a while, so I imagine the floor has moved up a bit, at least for the foreseeable future. 6.5% (or whatever it is) is pretty low 9.8 percentage for the era of book, and I feel like the cross-over appeal and impending show+movie could carry it for a while. That said, 10x 9.6 feels more realistic--a lot of other 70's/80's books with tough covers that are hard to get that extra push to 9.8 carry a similar multiplier. 20x though...feels a bit much. Correction might take a while though with only 73 copies and likely a pretty die-hard fanbase that'll hold em in their collections.

So what would my slipcased and signed hardcover trade be going for these days?  I've had it on my shelf for years, and seem top be asking in the $300 area for them though not many sold.

$300 would be a solid deal. Sold prices are all over the place, from around $350 to $700+, depending on god knows what. Condition, time of day, what the seller ate for breakfast, etc.
