Whenever you get a group of people with strong emotions and a hint of social awkwardness together on the internet you'll often get toxicity or at least the appearance of it every so often.

Some use the pretext of an "intelligent and mature discussion" to hide or justify their toxicity, and some are so used to seeing toxicity that they'll see it where there was none.

Either way just do your best to not let it get to you and move on, theres often very little you can do about it

I write this, because rather than shutting it down and closing up shop, I really do like it here, and out of frustration of the culture that seems to be developing, I want to also hear from other board members to know if I am the only one really experiencing this toxicity.

But I do believe that the CGC Forum, for all its wonder, wealth of knowledge, and niche (yes, comic books are definitely niche) interests, has become a place where passive aggressive, angry, and sometimes flat out aggressive attitude, dominates the subject lines.

I am guilty of it too. It's difficult to not get roped up in a heated conversation when you feel like you are being attacked, finding new ways to one up my 'opponent'.

I like to assume this is because we are all very passionate individuals, with strong opinions on what we enjoy and love! I like to assume that this is because we all want to believe that we are doing it right. After all, when we are spending our money, our hard earned, scraped together pennies, in a very difficult world, I do not want to think I am just simply, throwing it away on a whim. 

I understand that we all have very different opinions, whether it's that GA and SA books are the one true comic, or that blue labels are superior to the yellow label SS series. How this artist is inferior to that writer, and this era of comics suck, so why are you buying these books. 

My last point is, I get it, I do, but I am just hoping that some people read this, and I'm writing this out to myself as well, where I can correct some of my behaviours that I've developed, and rebuild a foundation to what I think to be is one of the greatest niche hobbies, filled with clever and insightful individuals that anyone could ask for. 

 

there are some that seem to use the boards to work out personal issues.  Most of their posts are nasty comments.  I could name names but I would get a strike.  We've all seen it.  arguing is one thing-if someone goes after me, I will engage.  Usually I will ignore it for a while then decide enough is enough.  The people I am talking about actively seek to make enemies, to work out their personal issues.

I see these from time to time and don't understand them. If you don't like the category/section you are in just move to 
another. Many of the more toxic members have been gone for awhile or they lurk and don't post because of it 
or they have been threatened with a ban.

Leaving this place would a mistake on your part, but you are free to find another forum. There are several, but 
nothing compares to the amount of information here. Even spec and comic related sites borrow quite a bit of 
information from here. 

I am not sure what you have done, but honestly many times when someone becomes that toxic here it wasn't
the board's fault that got them that way. The ignore function will do you wonders try using it.

I would take the time to enjoy some of the gems that can be found here.

I just recently discovered such a gem, and I enjoyed the read very much.  A reply by BlowUpTheMoon on the first page has a link to a thread that gives more background, I just linked this one instead because its where I started on the Amphoman Journey..   edit: ok just to be clear, his books are trash, the posts on these threads are comedy gold.

I ignore people, I have two pages full. Most are long gone. When I occasionally toggle and read I am almost always reminded why I put them on ignore. I have granted amnesty twice and let most off the list but no more mass amnesties granted, only individual cases.

I enjoy employing false outrage, aka gofistyourself, as a mocking nod to the FDQs who cannot do anything BUT take offense at things they read on a screen, without tone and at face value. I do tend to eliminate frustration in my life too quickly perhaps, but tolerating spoons ain't my groove.

So many people give the love here. Far more than obsess over themselves. Just today I have deleted a few sentences that served no purpose than to try and show how smart or cutting I can be. you should all be more like me.
