Problems with CGC grading a CLEANED and pressed book with a purple label. My thoughts. 7 7

My understanding is that if a comic is improperly dry cleaned (say some color rub occurs or an abrasion is created), the book is simply downgraded in a universal label... it never gets a restored label.  What makes this topic a little suspect to me is that there are many long time AND VOCAL CGC board members that have dry cleaned and submitted hundreds if not thousands of books, and as far as I know, not a single one has reported a solely dry cleaned book having received a restored label.

I have submitted many books under my account. I never received a conserved or restored grade based on dry cleaning.

@BrashL  Trust this guy,   When he says many he's talking about 10s of thousands of books.

Joe, just got back a box of books you worked on.  None got dinged for dry cleaning and a couple had surprisingly good results.

My average has been 1,500 to 2,000 a month for the last 15 years.

And I know myself and all of the others greatly appreciate it !

So that equates to around 10k of Greggy's books and 8k of the rest of ours per year.

So question: How many books have you had to turn away because you detected previous restoration?  Is it common? What sort of things have you seen?

That is an excellent question. 
 

I have been able to pick up certain telltale signs of chemical cleaning and water baths. I let my customers know my thoughts on the books and submit based on what they want to do going forward. Chemical and water baths are not that common, but I see where that will change based on YouTube trends. 
 

What I am seeing more and more of is poor press jobs. This has to do with a lot of dealers now pressing their own books.  I’m sure they hire someone out at $20 an hour just to squash books and it shows. Some of these books are not just poorly pressed, they are damaged beyond repair.

It's restoration, considered as such by the hobby long before CGC came into existence.

Peroxide is an oxidizer that, among other things, reacts with color dyes.  Get any on a non-white item of clothing and it will remove color from the fabric.  It's sufficiently reactive that it can damage skin ("it's burning") and be harmful to breathe.  It's neither a soap nor an inert chemical.  Isopropyl alcohol is also bad for the skin and can be harmful to breathe, plus it imparts an odor.
