Some observations:

  • There are no professional graders.  Last I checked, there’s no curriculum at any accredited institution where one can achieve a comic book grading certificate or diploma for this (part science, part art, part subjective) skill. All we have ever had, since the dawn of people collecting and distinguishing between nicer/crummier copies, is evolving opinions based on gained and shared experiences, and varying degrees of talent or personal interest.  We know this, as there are myriad threads and discussion about how often sellers as well as even the so-called experts get it wrong.

There may be no *certified* graders, but insofar as someone is paying CGC's graders to grade, that's their profession. Splitting hairs, I know. And in any profession, sometimes people get it wrong.

To continue splitting hairs, paying someone to do something means it's their job, or career, but not necessarily their profession. As mentioned, a "profession" requires formal qualification and continuing education.

It can be defined as a disciplined group of individuals, professionals, who adhere to ethical standards and who hold themselves out as, and are accepted by the public as possessing special knowledge and skills in a widely recognised body of learning derived from research, education and training at a high level, and who are prepared to apply this knowledge and exercise these skills in the interest of others

Accepted professions include medical doctors, accountants, lawyers, law enforcement officers, teachers, like that.  Think about lawyers, who can't represent others in court until they earn their degree from an accredited institution, pass the bar exam, join the bar, and then maintain several hours per year of continuing education.  That's a profession, as opposed to a career, occupation, or job.

There is no crease.

I’d pass on it.  Being obsessive-compulsive I like my VFs to have a subscription crease neatly folded down the middle.

astronomical pricing, but this one is my favorite. His grade is comical (VF-), but his price is the real gem: $3500!!

To be fair, it is a first issue, and those are always valuable.

(So I thought when I was a 12-year-old, anyway.)
