Ok.

Crazy as it may sound. With over 30,000 comics in my collection, I have never really been into war comics.

Sure I have my sgt fury 1....

Weird War Tales....

War Fury 1-4

Wings, Rangers, Fight...

And a few war books with GGA type covers

I also have smattering of esoteric issues like Dino star spangled, our army at war and others but I doubt I have over 500-1000 war type books.

But

If I were going to start "reading" a few war titles and getting the most bang for my buck...where do I go and start? I may already have some but would like someone to press the easy button for me please.

Also any recommendations for the best war books to chase down.

For DC

OAAW #81-83, 91, 112, 151 and 168. There are some semi keys - check OGP

G.I. Combat #44, #68, #87, #91 and #138 - some semi keys between those numbers.

Star Spangled War Stories #84-#90, #138-141, #151 - some semi keys between them.

Our Fighting Forces #45 and #123 - I am sure early OFF issues may be valuable.

All American Men of War #67, #89 and #94

Weird War Tales #1-12 (Joe Kubert, Neal Adams #8, Tony DeZuñiga, Howard Chaykin, Alex Toth and Sheldon Mayer -- of course, the most famous writer of all war comic books is Robert Kanigher. This title is tough to find in high grade.

For Marvel (Atlas), Charlton and Fawcett - not sure about other publishers

Of course -- Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos #1 - #10

Battle, Battlefield, Battleground and Battle Cry

I just started to collect them but I am still learning the new stuffs outside DC.

Did anybody pick up USS Stevens: The Collected Stories by Glanzman. Got my copy in the mail yesterday, gorgeous book. Can't wait to start reading it. I believe it collects all of his USS Stevens stories from, Dell, DC and Marvel and a new one for the book.

I thought USS Stevens was strictly directed under DC. Found more information about the artist Sam Glanzman who served on real-life USS Stevens and his art career: The Collected Stories by Glanzman.

Did you get it from Amazon? I found one too. Most recent print was July 2016 that is what you got?

Yep I got it on Amazon, my printing is 2016. The bulk of the material is the DC Issues, and a few from Savage Tales, and a 1 pager from Combat #16 and the cover to Combat #26. It looks like it only includes a 10 page story from A Sailor's Story. Looks like I need to pick that up too.

For reading, I would recommend picking up the thicker TPBs called Showcase Presents.

While all of these are great, I love the Unknown Soldier and Enemy Ace books. The War That Time Forgot book got me to really enjoy the Dinos. Sgt. Rock is a no brainer and the Haunted Tank stories are all great too.

See the pics below. For $10-20 each, you cannot go wrong. 2c

That is a nice stack of reading material.

In addition to the b/w Showcase editions, there is also color DC Archive Editions for Sgt. Rock vol. 1-4 and Enemy Ace vol. 1-2. Though they are a bit more expensive due to being out of print.

I've noticed DC is starting to put out a lot of Golden Age and Silver Age omnibus editions. Hopefully we will get some DC War ones. :wishluck:

If you want a small sample of just a few awesome stories, try the following:

OFF 152 "A Small Place In Hell" by Kirby

Weird War 3 "The Pool" by Heath

OFF 146 "Burma Sky" by Toth

GIC 74 "A Flag For Joey" by Andru/Espo

OAAW 79 "What's the price of a B-17" by Kubert

SSWS 199-200 "Deathride" by Talaoc

SSWS 148 "A Puppy Named Schatzi" by Kubert

OAAW 90 "3 Stripes Hill" by Kubert

OAAW 235 "Kamikaze" by Glanzman

Just my 2 cents, anyway....

As a follow up, SSWS 199-200 might be my "most read" war comics ever. Talaoc and Michelinie made magic on their run of Unknown Soldier stories in SSWS 183-203, but the battle/team-up between US and Mlle Marie was the stuff of legend, and ended with Marie vowing to kill the Soldier if she ever saw him once the war was over. Great stuff!

Does this contain Sam's stories from the Joe Kubert Presents series? Those are titled "I Remember."

In one of the stories Sam recounts the typhoon from December 17, 1944 that his USS Stevens encountered. One of the other destroyers in that group was named the USS Dewey. I had a dear friend who served on the Dewey and he would remember that typhoon. He and other sailors had to tie themselves to anything they could on the deck in order to survive the 90-degree rolls the Dewey had to take in the typhoon. :o They survived! Sam drew the Dewey in one of these stories and when I saw it I had shivers. (thumbs u

Hello everyone. I am the person who put together the USS Stevens collection. It took two years of my life, and I would encourage anyone interested in War Comics to give it a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

If anyone has any questions about this collection, just let me know. And if you have any questions for Sam, I can't promise a reply, but I can promise he will see your question.

Lastly, since putting together that collection of Sam's work at Dover Publications, I have left Dover to launch my own imprint called IT'S ALIVE! My imprint was picked up by IDW, so we will have solid distribution. I plan on publishing several more collections of Sam's work.

Recently, I ran a Kickstarter to raise the funds necessary to republish a graphic novel written by Joe R. Lansdale and illustrated by Sam Glanzman called RED RANGE. We were successful in raising the funds, and the Kickstarter version of the book will be out in November, with the regular IDW edition of the book coming out around January of next year.

I will be running more Kickstarters to publish many different types of reprints, including more books of Sam's work. (I am running one right to publish work for another legendary comics creator, Trina Robbins:

I am also selling some of Sam Glanzman's originals from his A SAILOR'S STORY graphic novels, and from his USS STEVENS stories that were published more recently in JOE KUBERT PRESENTS. I am working with Sam to sell these, as part of the money will go to him, and the rest will go towards getting more of his older work in print. If you are interested in grabbing a page of Sam Glanzman original art, and helping us put more of Sam's work back in print, let me know and I can show you what is available. My email is: drewfordcomics@gmail.com

Thank you for your time.

Best,

Drew Ford

Thanks for putting this material together. Sam's a great guy and his stories deserve a wider audience. :applause:

Fellers,

I zeroed out the Big-5 account. I'm not planning on further sponsoring any artists at this point. The Big-5 war comics banquet will still continue as a fan get-together (and any surviving Big-5 pros who join us will get a free dinner/drinks), but we're scaling back. We've been doing this for 21 years. One of the main reasons we held the banquets was to show some recognition for the creators who made the best genre DC ever put together. Over the years, we held auctions during the banquets from art donated by artists (often from artists in attendance, but a sizable amount of donations made in absentia) and turned that money over year after year after year to help underwrite the hotel and travel expenses. We received sweetheart deals on hotel accommodations from Comic-Con whenever possible, but most of the expenses were on our collective Big-5 dimes.

The list of pros who attended our banquets over the years is kinda staggering:

Russ Heath, Mort Drucker, Irv Novick, Joe Kubert, Jon Severin, Charles Cuidera, Sam Glanzman, Dan Spiegle, Ric Estrada, Sergio Aragones, Tom Yeates, George Pratt, Carmine Infantino, Tony Dezuniga, Gerry Talaoc, Bob Haney, Walt Simonson, Grey Morrow, Ayers, Angelo Torres, and probably a couple I'm forgetting. Of the 50s and 60s crew, only Heath, Drucker, and Glanzman are still alive. There are still people like Aragones, Simonson, Yeates, Adams, Tucci, and Pratt who all contributed to DC war AND contributed donations to the auctions over the years, but they all tend to make it out to the con on their own dimes or are special guests of the con. We've occasionally been lucky enough for most of them to drop in our banquets, but their attendance is often pending availability against competing events during the convention.

One of the original missions was to sponsor remaining artists. . .while they're alive to receive some recognition. With Russ fast approaching 90 and Sam at 92, the roster of artists (from the original Big-5 titles) even ABLE to attend has dwindled to a trickle. Sam Glanzman ALMOST made it a couple years ago, but health issues have made it prohibitive. Likewise, Russ Heath is still interested in attending, but the logistical concerns with travel to and from his home in Van Nuys (north of LA) along with his extremely limited mobility have made it a complicated 24-hour commitment, so I'm hoping that Comic-Con will kick in for him as a special guest in 2017 and any more remaining years. I received the endorsement of all Big-5ers in attendance at the banquet to turn over any remaining $$ after the auction and all the travel arrangement dust settling and split ALL the remaining $$ between Russ and Sam while the two of them can still benefit from the donation. I'm including a snapshot of the two bank checks that will be mailed out by Thecollectron (he doesn't know it yet, but I know I can count on him).

For future years, we will continue the war comics banquet, but the focus will move away from artist sponsorship and auctions to just an opportunity for old war comics collectors to convene at an annual event around a mutually loved genre--a modest but certainly no less compelling reason to get together.

Here are some snapshots of the bank checks I'm sending to Sam and Russ.
