I REALLY WANT THE SUSPENSE #3, BUT MY WIFE WILL KILL ME!

198 posts in this topic

Well I am for real as we saw last night I bid it up during the discussion to 3150 I think it was and was High bidder. At least for a while. I would say that shows for real even though reserve didn't meet, I didn't know it wouldn't.

Anyway, I see your point to a certain degree, but I still would not have changed my exchange on the boards, at least with GA, the example for a 150 dollar book is way diff. in my eye.

flowerred.gif Of course, with the new eBay anonymous bidder system, we have no way of knowing who is who.

BTW, the 150 dollar book was not my example. I think "defending" prices occurs more with big ticket books than small books.

I agree with tth2, something makes me go 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

I think it's a different animal here in the GA forum, where people are actually a lot more supportive of each other's collecting habbits. I personally don't see this act as being suspicious since I'd probably do the same thing, and pat the eventual winner on the back for willing to pay more for the book.

I don't necessarily think people on these forums would bid the book up on Mr. Schomburg to be vindictive, but some may own copies of the book already and would feel compelled to "defend" the price. It happens all the time, and I don't think there's anything wrong with it as long as they're not shilling for the seller. Hearing what any bidder would be willing to pay would be a license to "defend" the price right up to his limit, so long as that bidder was for real. If he ended up not bidding that amount, then he was just blowing a lot of smoke up our butts, wasn't he, in which case you have to wonder about his motivation for making his posts?

Like I said, I see no upside and lots of downside (being bid up, or being proved to be a phony) in acting this way.

I see your point, but sometimes collectors get bored and start thinking out load in front of everyone. Let's put it this way, I've been looking for a decent copy of Phantom Lady #23 for about 3 years now. In the mean time I may boast on these forums about paying through the roof to get a copy, but when the dust settles, my final bid may leave people scratching their heads. I certainly hope others don't start believing that I have a hidden agenda or am full of *spoon* just because I shared my initial thought process with other forum members here on these boards.

I went back and added a "crazy" graemlin to my post so that no one would think I was implying anything about Mr Schomburg.

While your fellow forumites aren't likely to believe there is a hidden agenda a lurker isn't necessarily reading every post or paying attention as to who is who. The type of discussion occuring in a small group at a Con is not necessarily the best discussion for an internet chat board.

I understand what you're saying about defending the price, but it doesn't feel right to me. Anything other than bidding on a book because you want it seems petty. Unless you're trying to extract vengence upon an enemy...then it's OK.

Yeah, I remember that discussion. I can't imagine how I'd feel if I saw something like that at a yard sale. cloud9.gif

Ok, so the fun of this book has been pretty much sucked away by a few of you. I however am not a liar, and buddy you don't even know me. I am not sure as to wether I will bid up to that amount as of now but I did bid not knowing the reserve. I guess I am old school, I revel in the exciting books my friends get, and love to share what I get or want. I have learned of another in better shape coming out soon. So maybe I won't go up to 3800, it will probably go more anyway. It would make no sense to bid if you didn't want the book, at least in this price range. Here is my ebay home page, see not a liar. although my max bid was 3050, not 3150. proofpage2.jpgProofpage.jpg

Don't get to riled up Schommy. Folks here just take a while to get to know people. There have been lots of guys come on the Boards, start out cool and then prove to be a wolf in sheep's clothing. I know you are ok, and they will too. It is all good, and we are glad to have you here.

Now buy the book, and show it off next week when it comes in and we will all ooh and ahh, promise! flowerred.gif

Look, guys here is the deal. Its Suspense #3, cover by L.B. Cole, and Alex Schomburg. Its sweet, and I don't think I would find anyone to disagree. I started this thread to actually find someone willing to broker it for me as I was jones'n so bad for it, and my wife and I were not seeing eye to eye. The other reason was to kind of talk it out, you know talk myself into it, cause it is a fair amount of money.

In the process, I actually did find someone to broker it for me, and my wife said ok to a point. The discussion that followed opened my eyes, to a few different views, a few I knew but wanted to ignore. The first and most important, is I propably shouldn't hide a purchase like that from my wife, second there will probably be another come around soon enough, so no need to go beyond my present comfort zone to make this auction possible. I still may bid, but I know of another S#3 for sale soon, a better copy. That extra time would allow me to not be uncomfortable. It seams as though this copy may go over 4k anyway. I did bid last night in the heat of the moment and would have been happy to win. I really don't think the market of this issue would be manipulated either way by my boast of bid amount. The reason for this is simple, enough people want this book, and they will bid to the amount the feel is right. If that is 3500 as is now, then thats it, if I bid 4000.00 someone could always pay more. I feel like books like this, you have a shot, you make your best and wait and see. It doesn't change the fact that if I bid 4k, then I have to be willing to pay that. Whether or not someone shill's me up or not. Its a big gamble for someone who just wants to make my life more costly to bid 3999.00 just because he/she thinks I will bid 4K and not have to pay. Since there is no way of knowing whether I will bid or not until the end. At that point that person must also want the book, and if they bid and I don't....they win! If the auction ended last night, I would have bid 4k, but learning of a better issue might sway me to wait. Heck I might even find a 5.00 copy! Yeah right! As to whether I am for real or not, I guess it doesn't matter, don't know why it matters to anyone else as unless they are bidding, and then if I bid yes it could cost them more, but If I won I would have to pay. I guess the logic excapes me to the reasoning behind the suspision. Well, I proved I did bid, and if I bid again and win, then I will crack and post the whole book...end of story.

Paul

Ok, so I have found many of your comments funny and enlightening. So here it is, my wife has given me the ok upto 4000.00 so, I guess we will see. The reserve is off now and its at 3500, so I have a feeling I am going to have to wait for another copy. I really didn't want to go over 3500, maybee 3800.00 so I have some thinking to do.

Oh, and I would not risk a divorce for a comic book. I have been known to *spoon* her off, but not divorce. I could have worse habits, like porn, drugs, hookers ect..., so comics are not that bad. I even make money on them sometimes.

Make a full color copy of the Suspense #3 that Heritage auctioned off a few months ago, and then take the $3,500 you were going to spend and take a week long vacation in Hawaii and enjoy yourselves! hi.gif
