  1. and yet a 9.8 book is technically not defect free
  2. I've seen 9.0 and 9.2's that are supremely nice. I might request 9.4 or better when I'm looking for stuff from people to hedge against possible grading differences between us. Lower grades are an option when certain books are just priced to high or hard to come by in any grade. Moderns in my opinion should be 9.4 or better unless they are mishandled. Judge the book in hand if you can. Happy collecting!
  3. Bought some HG Batmans and HQ #1. They were in excellent shape and safely packaged. Decent seller
  4. Why is that book only an 8.0?
  5. I know the day will come for me also but I don't see when. I'd be curious to see what you had.
  6. No offence but... wildly_fanciful_statement on this thread
  7. I agree with most comments in the thread. I would surmise that the dealer and buyer most likely missed checking something on the back cover. A lot of people just assume it's ok. On high priced items I would always ask to see front and back, have a look at the interior page quality, and at least look at the splash page. I've made the same mistake myself. Having said that, there are dealers who I always see at cons I wish I never did. Their items are never priced according to the grade even after they offer a discount. Other dealers, I could buy off their website without even asking to see a pic because I am that confident of the quality. If they are off by a grade on raw books, I am not going to lose sleep about it. It's probably a damn nice book. If you look closely at the book, you should know straight off what it was dinged for. The difference between a 8.0 and 9.0 is rather noticeable unless you are new to grading. I think the 'spare a grade' thread on this board will get you up to speed fairly.
  8. Marvel is now in possession by a very corporate entity. The idea that the artists had the freedom to do the things they once did and are able to get approval from a board of executives will prove difficult. Also, are people that in to super-hero books like they once were? We all like the classic characters. Are there any new major heroes within the last 10 years that can rival the ones we grew up with? It seems to me the more realistic characters with reasonable modified abilities (Batman, DD, Cpt. A,...) or super/multi-powered characters (X-Men, GOTG,...) are where the movie success seems to be.
  9. fav comic book... 1) series ? 2) character ? 3) movie ?
  10. Yes, the seller fee is taxed. There was also a shipping label change announcement that will allow you to pay shipping fees through Shippo or payPal. Clearly they want you to use their new Shippo affiliate and claim lower shipping costs, but I remain dubious to those claims.
  11. I collect DD, and I've never had trouble finding something I needed until this last year. Mycomicshop, and Heritage have fewer auction listings than normal, and the extremely high grade and key copies command a large premium when they're offered. I see your points. I was wondering if anyone else was seeing the same thing and whether or not this trend was temporary.
  12. Anyone else having trouble finding slabs to fill your collections? There was a time when some auction would have something for me to pick up that I needed to complete a run I was working on. Now the auction listings appear to be fewer and prices appear to be higher than normal. Is this economy related?
  13. I'm a big fan of the show. I think they got a lot of things right on the show. The Mansion, access and interior to the batcave, some good casting (Newmar and Ward especially), and superb writing (Lorenzo Semple). Naturally, the show was part-comedy, so it was purposely cheesy. Special effects weren't available for comic book tv/movies until just the turn of the century. I liked a lot of West's work on the show, but to me he wasn't what I pictured Wayne/Batman to be. Robin (Ward) was spot on. I don't mean to speak ill of the man after his death but he wasn't not the nicest person to his fans from autograph signing stories that I have heard, and his ego was higher than his acting career merited. Now if Newmar dies I'll really be in mourning. They broke the mold after they made her. I'll never know when we see another woman like her.
  14. I too have not completed anything of high significance. DD is my closest completed set.
