I think of the 100s I've destroyed, and ponder "why there are any left?"
I thought of you as I was starting this thread. You have freed many a Silver over the years.

I bought my ASM 239 in an old slab but when it was delivered it had a crack.
I really wanted to have an original slab in my collection but my OCD forced me to reholder it.
I’ve had a few of those myself. I wanted to keep the vintage label for historical purposes but the OCD…

Speaking of ReHolders, does anyone here know if CGC uses the same heating and sonic methods used to seal the books to also take apart the slab and inner well?

Ah, hmm, well if they don't then do I roll the dice? Maybe back to square one.
How would we know if QC has significantly improved?
That’s hard to tell. I had two ReHolder submissions this year, no problems this year, but last year…. If you do decide to go for it then good luck.

Hmm, hadn't thought about onsite reholder.
It's about $1K-$1.2k book if the case wasn't cracked.
I may wait till con season and walk it in to a close by con if cgc is there doing reholders. That's a possibility.
Unless walk-ins are also a crapshoot of quality too?
I thought CGC didn’t do ReHolders on site.

I’ve had two this year, the first one only took three weeks, my second one took two months. My first one only needed the creator comments corrected, maybe that’s why the first one was so quick?

Hello!
This is ancient history but I’m curious what the community thinks about books in vintage CGC holders. Do you pass if you see one for sale? Do you think they are neat relics of the past?
I got my first CGC book in 2006, since then I’ve only owned ten or eleven vintage holders. I only have three currently in my collection since the others arrived cracked after shipping, they are fragile after all.
I recall rumblings in the mid 2000s about CGC being more strict on page quality and grade in the early years, prompting discussions about cracking those vintage holders for upgrades. I also heard SCS was a problem in many of those holders.
I don’t see too manny of these holders on eBay or places like ComicLink anymore, I’m sure many have gone through the CPR treatment, especially the Golden Age pedigree examples.
Curious on your thoughts, observations and experiences.

I grew up in the 80s but was too young, I saw it on Netflix and decided to find out what I missed. Lol
The family guy clip is classic, I've tried to use gifs of it on the boards, but none capture to where anyone knows what I'm talking about. And a video, in most cases is to long etc. I'm rambling other than to sympathize and say,
I hear you!

First Generation CGC Holders (2000-03)

CGC has since stated that all of their holders are archival safe, and changing the holder every several years is not necessary.
