Buying Golden Age keys on the newsstand
Comicdey replied to TheSurgeon's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
My father was born in 1930, he was raised in the small town of Sequim Washington as a dairy farmer. The silo of the family farm is still standing near the paradise restaurant. They didn’t have much money but his aunt worked at a local store so he would get new comics on rare occasions but would regularly get remaindered comics as a child through his early teen years. He fostered my collecting, sadly passed in 2011, but I still recall the day I found a Superman 2 and showed it to my dad. He was telling me the stories in the issue before I read the book. Sadly when he went into the Navy during the Korean War his step mom did some house cleaning and gave away all his stuff. Pretty sure his collection would be a centerpiece for mine if she wasn’t “that” stepmom. I have a photo somewhere of my dad reading that Superman and I sold it to Pointfive years ago at my cost. 👍. I’m sure he still has it. -

2019 March Madness Grading Tournament Prize Thread
Comicdey replied to thehumantorch's topic in Comics General
I’ll take prizes next year :-) -
I compare those two as bronze key origins that I bought off the stands and before they were worth anything, I knew they were cooler than most other books. Iron man 55 also falls in that catagory along with a handful more that haven’t spiked Insanely. Well strike that for a few as some have more recently.

Hulk 181 Wolverine appearance would rank right up there with issues of Spider-Man 129 1st Punisher. Beyond that I have a tough time comparing. Maybe if you say he is the future antagonist to hulk and everyone that Dr. Doom was to the FF in their glory. Doom got his own one shot and it didn’t go vertical like Hulk 181

DM me if you want to close that gap. I have two high grade slabs and a few raw. I like my metal men.

I found it in 2015. Sold off the low grade books and some key dupes and kept most. Probably should sell some some day.- 274 replies

Finding AF 15 for cheap can happen and I’ve seen it twice. Nice story here though... I know a dealer picked up a low grade copy at a Salvation Army for .25c, and I know this because I bought it from him for $1400 back many years ago. I subsequently sold it to Gator who then had it slabbed as a 2.5. Everyone shook the money tree on that copy. I bought a copy for the equivalent of $3 when I purchased a large collection at auction 3300 books/10k so $3/book. Of course I paid $3 for books of no value too but it was a straight up auction. Slabbed it and sold it as a 1.8. Was fortunate enough to trade/cash for my 3.0 keeper a while back but dang if prices haven’t just kept climbing. I never should have sold a single copy I owned :-)

I’ve aways loved these GS issues and I’ve had them all over the years. At this point I think I’m only missing GSX1 because I keep selling them when I have them. But I have a ton of dupes thanks to an Original Owner Collection I found a few years back. Here are a few examples. Everyone should have the full set of 1974-1975 goodness.- 274 replies

Joey does great work for sure. And if you don’t do the CT removal and press, the next dealer who has the book will. Just a fact at this point. So those that hate pressing or CT removal scrapes have to be willing to pay up for those books with minor CT or pressable defects if they want to stay with Virgin books.
