this is happening to me more and more these days. especially with old holders. just got into a spat with an eBay buyer over some “scuffing” on the lower side of the slab. i didn’t even notice it. i knew he was just going to send it for a press or a reholder anyway. i didn’t advertise it as pristine but i did have it priced to sell well below the 90-day and offered free shipping and insurance. i offered him a full refund to return it. he wanted to keep it and be refunded $20. i told him to stick it and that i wasn’t paying for his reholder. i recently sold another slab in an old holder and the guy sent me a picture of a crack in the slab. there was no crack when i shipped it and furthermore he sent me pictures of the shipping box—no damage whatsoever. so he probably cracked it. i offered him the same thing, full refund for return. he wanted $15 for reholder.

so, bottom line, this is complete bullsh*t. lots more buyers are gonna start this garbage. it’s a perfect hustle. they threaten you with negative feedback and you feel pressured to just give back the $15 or $20 to avoid the hastle.

this is why i am done selling slabs on eBay. it was fun while it lasted.

Man I've received some really really sketchy holders from mostly non eBay sellers. 3 were from major auction sites. Obviously these defects weren't pointed out on the listings at the time nor were they visible from their single image on the listings. I never asked for any refunds!

It's always best to post as many detailed pictures of the book as possible. Fully disclose any defects at all in description. Just throwing up a picture or 2 leaves you vulnerable to these types of shenanigans.

Really? I didn’t know CVA was a guaranteed premium these days...last I saw it was only guaranteed to be the butt of jokes...

At the risk of being persistently off topic... Yes to both.

If you were ever in possession of one & put it up for sale I'm absolutely positive you'd charge just the regular market rate right?... And not a penny more right?

Has GPA done an analysis? Maybe it did really well because it's a really nice copy of a key book? It seems silly to me, they're not doing anything a seasoned collector can't do just looking at the book in person. But I guess if you are paying $5000 for something on line where the scans only show so much, maybe it's worth the premium.

I would imagine the premium justification would be that not all "nice & sharp" looking copies are designated CVA. Some are rejected

I think if you click the cert # next to the book it might identify the CVA designation under the key comments section. Not sure about that though. Anyways lots of them are sold on Clink.

I wish they would break down based on UPC or direct editions. That would be quite helpful!

Has the market spoken or is there an army of shadow bidders shilling up some of the books? (If you own some CVA books, wouldn't you want that?)

The thread here in January seemed to disagree. Have things changed in 2 months?

I don't know if there's shill bidding going on? How would anyone know? Point is that they're going for higher prices. Those numbers are being recorded. Regardless of phony bidding or not the market rate is what it is.

I wasn't keeping up with the thread in January or know if I posted in it or not. I was pointing out my thinking that the Tec 411 went for a high price due to the CVA.

That is hilarious. They charge nearly as much as CGC, but all they're doing is looking at a book and deciding "that's a really nice looking 9.6." I'm an insufficiently_thoughtful_person for not having thought of this service.

Yes however the market has spoken. I didn't decide this but agree or disagree it carries a premium. Mostly a sizable premium.

More awesome books.  I used to own a page of original art from Issue 145, another nostalgic issue my brother and I bought when we lived in Hawaii.  Hated getting rid of that page so much.

Issue 145 was Ross Andru pencils and Frank Giacoia inks , if memory serves.  Issue 146 was drawn by Andru, but inked by a few different folks, affectionately listed as John Romita and the Gang on the Splash page.  Some pages were absolutely gorgeous to me, while a few left me scratching my head.

    Anyone else notice this?

I believe it was Don Warfield along with Romita on 146. Joe Rosen was lettering. The page artwork  wasn't always consistent on bronze silver books. I don't think that was uncommon. Maybe it was time constraints? Who knows?

BTW, Gil Kane is the greatest artist ever imo! The only signature I'd want more than Lee's would be his. He lived & passed away in Aventura, FL, a Miami suburb near where I live. Great man!!

I think that Hulk #181 has real demand and real appreciation. We would need a huge comic book crash for this book to really come back down. At that point there will be lots of books to choose from. If this market stays healthy, the ship has left the port and will continue to climb.  Hulk #181 is a top book to own especially in 9.6-9.8  I don't think it will be cheaper so buy one if you want one. 10,200 CGC copies and only 100 9.8 copies it would take a lot to kill that demand for a top book of a character soon to be fully owned by Disney. Just an opinion.

Agreed. It's unclear what the catalyst for a sudden severe dip would be? Maybe if the MCU doesn't get full rights to the x-men I guess. I still don't think that would cause a significant drop in valuation though. Some people seem to be seeing a 181 crash behind every telephone pole! IMO the book has enjoyed a steady organic increase due to the popularity of the character

As for macro economy & stock market if the great recession wasn't enough to really hurt major silver & bronze keys I don't think a typical downturn would. Only thing that could possibly be affected a bit in that scenario would be the lower graded 181s.

It's because of the cva. Never bid on a cva (in hopes of winning) unless you're prepared to pay through the nose. I learned that the hard way. Had it been a gold sticker the price would've reached whackadoo bonkers level!

You’re accumulating quite the collection of 9.8 white pagers!  I’m a sucker for white pages, so I say WELL DONE SIR!!!

Thanks. I'm guilty of being a sucker for the whites as well! I'll accept some mis-wrapping off centering etc, in favor of what that label says. I know some will disagree but that's just what my preference is. Stay tuned there's more to come. Perhaps even a major key, say...in the medium term or so.

Great books!  I was always a big fan of that ASM 161 cover, but didn't really care for the 162 cover.  I remember buying 161 at the PX on base when we moved to Fort Benning, GA.  Loved the Nightcrawler in both these books, plus the Punisher, didn't get much better to this 10 year old.

Thanks man. Glad you liked them. Did you buy it when it was released back in 76?

I think 161 is a little undervalued considering the cameos. It probably would be of more value had punisher been depicted on cover. I love the crawler he's my second favorite x-man behind the obvious wolvie. Stay tuned there might be another one tomorrow or soon.

Yes sir, I saw that after I replied to you. GPA also mis-reports when a seller clicks the button for "send offer" via an email reply. So, if the item is for sale for $1000, and the seller does "send offer" via email for $600, GPA will report it as a $1000 sale.

Yes! I made an offer on eBay for an ASM 94 once & GPA recorded the original bin. There was a pretty big difference there. I don't know if that's GPA's fault or eBay's?

ugh… Strange Tales 110 comes to mind. CGC 3.5 spent $1,200 about a year and half ago. Last GPA about $920.

    That's an example of many.

I was sober when I bought it.

Doctor Strange is not a household name. Strange tales is not a well known title to those who don't live & breath comics. Thinking of that in low grade as investment is getting too cute. Which others?

To the extent there is such thing as investment books they'd involve the obvious classic title keys first/early appearances of better known characters IMO. Giant size Spider-man 4 is hot at the moment.

why?? it seems not that hard to get a cva sticker. i have one on an ASM129 9.4, i mean come on, half those books could get a cva sticker.

Mainly because they were white pagers on books that where not so easily found in white. It wasn't because of the sticker. I personally put a high premium on white pages but that's just me.

The market has determined that CVA designation to be of significant value. It's probably not that popular on this message board but it obviously has its high dollar supporters

There's an authorization search tool on the CVA site but it's still under construction. Do you think Clink would auction off phoney CVA books?
