  1. Rio was the first CD/album I ever bought. (I started with CDs and had one of the first portable players.) And Ordinary World was my first live concert. Btw, you gotta get one of these- https://www.rootsvinylguide.com/ebay_items/duran-duran-cd-singles-box-sets-81-85-13-disc-collection It's all of the singles in CD form with all of the art shrunk down. B-sides galore. Very fun. I think there is an 86-up box too.
  2. Technically, Black Hole Collectors = Unlimited Budget. You don't care if your heirs get the value back out, it's all just "decoration art" money, etc. That's a fine way to collect. I just can't swing it, personally. And if you'll forgive me for going full grimdark, we are all sellers at some point. Just a matter of time. Unless your heirs take on the collection and keep it going. (Ruh roh, new thread time! Maybe good for Comics General. Hmmm... You guys might have to venture over there.)
  3. There are probably some Youtube vids out there about how to steam it before putting it under pressure. These come in handy! -- https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=rinzler+star+wars+making+of+(hardcover%2CHC)&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_sop=15&_osacat=0&_odkw=rinzler+star+wars+making+of
  4. It doesn't really occur to me, but I always find a JPG of the final online and save it for reference. A virtual "tear sheet".
  5. A. Or B if you're feeling a Spider-tingle about A.
  6. My hope is that new collectors will enter the hobby and not think of it as a mindfield. So I just want to offer again to any new people in the hobby... feel free to PM me if you have questions on something you are considering buying. If it is something I or my wife are interested in, I will let you know up front that it's a conflict of interest. My wife and I have been lucky to have met folks here and at cons to bounce potential purchases off of occasionally. I'd like to pay it forward. And I'm sure there are other boardies here who are retired or semi-retired from buying who would be happy to comment via PM on your purchases too.
  7. At the time, I emailed HA and requested they publicly post ALL of the lots you consigned with them. No reply. That would be the only way I think you could really put this to rest. Thanks for re-posting that. I know many of the long-term boardies here hate to re-hash such bad memories. It's not why we come here to commune about our hobby as an "escape" from work, stress, etc., BUT I was astonished to find the original thread zapped. Not cool mods. I know comics have dealt with this behaviour in the past and to a much greater extent, but this was a big eye-opener for the OA corner. So it is important that those coming in know what's transpired in case it happens again -- And not just from Mike Burkey, but to get an overall sense of how the art market can go awry. Now, that being said, as much as I dislike this "flipping" thread -- and I've said earlier in it that I think it promotes a guilt-before-innocence mentality -- I have taken @Lee B.'s point (and others) that it does serve an information purpose to the otherwise uninformed. (I just operate on the baseline that you have to do due diligence on your own buys, but OK... we'll crowdsource it.) *And on a deeper point, I agree with @AnkurJ that I dislike that dealers get a flipping pass while collectors who might resell get dinged. People, this is the flat-world internet age. The reality is that you are all dealers now because you have direct access to your buyers in a way you never had before. Hence, dealers are no longer necessary gatekeepers. And flipping is just a matter of a time line. I wish I could keep it all, but anyone trying to actively build their collection toward certain goals on a limited budget is going to have to sell/trade. But carry on with my least favorite thread.
  8. For my personal taste, I think I'd go with the indie explosion of the 80s. Turtles, obvs, but also all that was enabled because of it. The Crow, First Comics, etc. How that was tied to distribution changes, the expansion and collapse of the Direct Market. And what happened to some of that IP -- whether it lived on or not.

Award-winning writer and lecturer Arie Kaplan will draw on his experience profiling comic legends like Jack Kirby and Stan Lee in this gripping multimedia presentation that demonstrates the importance of progressive Jewish values in shaping the Golden Age of Comics and the gritty alt-comic scene of the 70s and 80s. He will be joined for a post-lecture talk back with Workers Circle Board Member and Jewish culture commentator Michael Kaminer celebrating both comic and graphic novel milestones and highlights from 120 years of Workers Circle history. Program participants will have the opportunity to mingle over spiked superhero punch and nostalgic deli bites. $18 for non-members // $10 for Workers Circle Members
  11. And he actually won a Kirby award... from Kirby.
  12. There was a group that showed up in costume at the first one, probably thinking it was a Big Apple show. All the art collectors were looking at them like they were nuts. And then they started walking the room looking at prices... and thinking we were all nuts!
  13. They make it in every conceivable size in both pockets and L-enclosures. Check my links above or bagsunlimited. I bet you could even call them for a sample or mix and match. First, locate your local hospital.
  14. I'd have thought you were completely off of commissions by this point. Published pages might be more expensive in some cases, but they are a LOT less stress. I just don't want to see any new-ish enthusiastic collectors get frustrated with the hobby or leave because of the typically high-risk commission experience. That's a tough road even for the more experienced collectors.
  15. Check out this post- https://www.cgccomics.com/boards/topic/461872-need-help-storing-original-art/?do=findComment&comment=10980835 and this one- https://www.cgccomics.com/boards/topic/412197-mylars-for-oa/?tab=comments#comment-9694622 TL:dr is you can either get a gallery box or one of the 18x24 Itoyas. Good luck!
  16. Hey everyone, the wife and I have a few things in CLINK tonight. There are some crazy bargains in here. Prices are probably at about 1/3 of FMV. These are choice pieces we had cherry-picked for our collection. So benefit from our amazing taste and bid with total abandon! João Silveira watercolor and ink Silveira Swamp Thing pinup 2017 https://www.comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?id=1371348 This piece speaks for itself. In person, it is just... jewel-like. The detail, the color, the pathos. Unreal. Kind of can't believe we are selling this. Marco Rudy pencils and inks, Swamp Thing (2011) 15 pages 16-17 DPS https://www.comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?id=1371350 Marco Rudy is this generation's Steranko. His intricate layouts and razor-sharp inks are lovely to behold. Nice big DPS! Adam Hughes pencils, John Nyberg inks, Nexus 57 page 12, large art 19.5x14 https://www.comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?id=1371358 This is an oversized piece. Early, early Hughes art on Nexus. This is the best page from the issue with a great hero shot of the new Nexus meeting Horatio. Renato Guedes pencils, Jose Wilson Magalhães inks, Action Comics 850 page 21 https://www.comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?id=1371351 A splashy page featuring the whole JLA from the anniversary issue. Guedes art was just perfect for Big Blue. Mike Grell pencils on vellum, Jon Sable Freelance 22 page 13, 22 page 16, 23 page 9 Three early Sable pages on vellum. We picked these out because they showed three aspects to Sable's life- his writing career, his relationship with Myke, and of course his night job. https://www.comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?id=1371355 https://www.comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?id=1371356 https://www.comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?id=1371357 Brett Booth pencils Norm Rapmund inks Flash (2011) 33 page 10 https://www.comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?id=1371349 Wow! Booth has done some amazing splashes, but this one is practically 3D. And it has his terrific design for Future Flash. Mark Bagley pencils Art Thibert inks Ultimate Spider-Man 55 page 9 https://www.comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?id=1371354 We picked this one out because it has the three leads and really shows the love triangle. You get a great sense of Gwen's personality here. I miss this book. Might be time for a re-read! Alex Sanchez pencils, inks, wash Batman and Rogues Gallery double-page pinup, 2012 https://www.comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?id=1371347 A stunning pinup with all of the villains and loads of detail. The inking and wash work is not to be believed. Click to make larger because you're going to want to see it! Timothy Truman mixed Truman Conan RPG cover Modiphius Entertainment 2015 https://www.comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?id=1371359 Brilliant detail and dynamic figure drawing on this. Truman really knocked it out of the park. And he uses this as one of his best-selling convention prints. Barry Kitson, James Pascoe inks over blueline stat, Empire Vol.1 2 page 22, 2 page 23 If you know EMPIRE, you know this pivotal scene!! Mind-blowing series from Mark Waid. Buy this and go read it now! https://www.comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?id=1371352 https://www.comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?id=1371353
  17. Oh, I don't doubt they are drowning in volume with everyone cashing out of comics left and right (due to demographics and Death of Print.) I'm just questioning the choice of Monday night.
  18. I don't know why HA is trying to reinvent the wheel here. There is so much data that ebay auctions do best on Sunday night at 7pm PST/10pm EST or secondarily the same time Tuesday-Thursday. They should look at comics vs OA, see which one brings in more money, and leave that on Sunday. Move the other to Wed night... might be a little buzz in the air after everyone gets their weekly comics.
  19. I bet you could easily get a local carpenter you duplicate that same design at a larger size. There are a few things here- https://www.universityproducts.com/exhibit-display/book-displays-and-supports Good luck with the art room reno!
  20. You guys are all amateurs. My spreadsheet has macros in it. And you call yourselves nerds. Pshaw.
  21. I actually think this is going to mess with prices on this piece more than anything. It's not "one piece, there it is."
  22. Any criticism below given in a very grateful spirit that you all put so much time and work into this! I LOVE the CAF Best Of! As I said in the other thread, you really need to toss the "only 5 votes" thing. It's never going to work if your goal is to encourage more voting. We are in the Instagram age... View the piece, click Like (or don't), click to the next one, repeat. You can "vote" as many times as you like. The results get tallied on the back end and split up into however many categories were presented to the owner submitting the piece. The work isn't in the clicking Like. It's in trying to order your selects down to five pieces. That's the fail here. That's also why having Other be a dumping ground is not a big deal. Because the main body of voters are interested in Covers, Splashes, and Panel Pages, you want to keep those as clean as possible. I also think you need to remove the word Unpublished from Covers, Splashes, and Panel pages. Again, it's just going to muddy up those categories. Looking through Other, there were only 124 entries... much less than some of the main categories. So I think you are trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist. I think most people are OK with Other being "everything else". I think the only thing you could do would be to break that up into two parts - Published and Unpublished. That would separate out the commercial illustrations (animation, house ads, movie, game). Otherwise, I think the existing categories are pretty clear and make sense.
