Here's another one for your all y'all. Guess the grade, find the tick, and advise if it will benefit from a press. :)

I sent it in as a slabbed 9.8, but someone mishandled it somewhere, tough luck.

Would you consider this color breaking, you think it can be improved? Sorry, I'm a noob to pressing.

Im saying it doesnt matter if there was evidence of tamper or not. The book gets graded again.

We are talking about reholder service here. Here is what the CGC Service & Fees page says. Feel free to read the black and white.

"ReHolder: A comic book in a CGC holder is encapsulated in a new CGC holder. The grade assigned to the book should not change, unless any damage occurred post-encapsulation, in which case the grade will be adjusted accordingly. To qualify, the book must still be encapsulated in its original CGC holder."

  3. If you have signed books with COAs and you feel (a) they should be at par with the CGC SS, or (b) do not like the result of what those books will end up with based on CGC grading standards, then CGC slabbing is not for you.

The CGC SS program has been around for a while and it works, so to modify it based on what you think it should be is giving disservice/disrespect to those collectors and books who have been around from the start.

I dont believe this is accurate. There is a very high probability it will receive the same grade but its not guaranteed.

Huh, I thought that was what I meant. If you submit a 9.8 book for reholder service and there is no tampering, it will always get the same 9.8, guaranteed.

I was wondering, can I submit a book that is already CGC graded and have a custom label (example NYC spidey) added to it, without the comic having to be regraded?

Yes, just go to the submission page and select the Reholder option. It will ask you for the certification number and an optional custom label, if available and applies to your book. Unless there was evidence of tampering, CGC will not regrade it and honor the previous grade.

I submitted around 5 times with this process, no issues. :)

I'll be dead honest. Even though my favourite  character is Batman and Jim Lee is one of my all time favourites, I think that X-men 1 cover is his crowning achievement. Too bad he couldn't replicate that awesomeness in the All Star Batman foldout of the Batcave (which I felt was a bit weak, especially the angle chosen).

X-Men #1, first full art control... cheesy by today's standards, but it is so 90s.

  7. Don't count too much on centering. The comic will still move around inside the slab in varying degrees of force. As far as cleaning/pressing, depends on the book and how satisfied you are on the current condition. Personally if I'm happy with the current grade and just want a new slab or label, I just submit using the Reholder option -- assuming the book was untouched and the old slab hasn't been opened, it will just inherit the old grade. But if you clean/press, it is as if you submitted the book fresh and CGC will not take into consideration the old grade.

if money is no issue and this is for your personal collection, then you could always buy a high grade new Mutants 1 for $56 online and wait for the next claremont signing. You'd get a much higher grade for your personal collection.

In my mind I've always debated the "from my personal collection" and "sentimental value" concept. Yeah I may have gotten it from back in the day, lined up for it, saved up my lunch money, etc. but if the population is large, would I rather get something better now rather than hold on to my "personal" lower grade. For example, a lot of people slab McFarlane Spawns or Jim Lee X-Mens that they dug up, but were actually produced in the millions with far better condition.

Everyone's opinions may vary and I respect that, but personally I'm starting to be more practical than sentimental.

I have 2 books on queue with Desert Wind. I fully understand about Chandler's health issues and wish him well.

Anyhow, I was curious today and went to DWC's website and saw this message on the Romita signings: "Mr. Romita has decided not to sign in the near future." Chances are getting slimmer and slimmer, unfortunately.

Update: Another reason for checking the DWC website was because I got UPS shipment notification that I wasn't aware about. Sure enough I checked the UPS reference number and it matches my DWC order number. I sent slabbed books to DWC for the signing so wondering why it's coming from CGC? Very unlikely the signing went ahead, but most likely it was cracked opened by them then reslabbed back. Waiting from a response from DWC.

    Heard back from DWC:

"I show that both of your books were signed by John Romita Sr. We had multiple signings with him since late April until about late July. We got about 95 percent of our books done. I show that your books were done and sent to CGC."

Hope that some of you made it before Mr. Romita's decision to stop signing. :)

Just had first batch of my Jim Shooter Signing books shipped and it seems the concerns on how CGC are handling these books during these in-house signings may perhaps be well founded.

I submitted 4 books, all in their original 9.8 slabs, which CGC cracked and prepped at $5 cost.

Disappointed to report that, although 3 retained 9.8 grade, one book dropped to 9.6. As you can imagine and doesn't fill me with hope for the other 3 batches of books that I have also submitted for broader Shooter, Zeck and Beatty signing.

The frustrating part is that they ALL should have retained their grades and CGC should do the best to make sure it retains the previous grade whilst in their care. Because they were all sent in their original graded 9.8s slabs I opted not to have this batch go to CCS for pressing (and nor should I have to really either).

Amother frustration is that there are no graders notes to explain the grade drop, so completely in the dark on why they have decided to ping the book. Did it get damaged on CGC opening the slab, or the prep? Or did Shooter manhandle the thing?

Luckily I have hi-res scans of the slab prior at least and will report back with comparison images prior to sending to CGC when I get the books back in hand.

The worst part is that I rang customer service who sadly were far from their usual helpful selves and simply referred me to the T&C's, refusing to take to responsibility or help. Not like the team usually sadly...

    Caveat Emptor

Yes, being mishandled is a possibility. Also, not all graders are the same, and it's a given and unfortunately a known fact that grader's ratings are not consistent -- one grader's 9.8 is someone's 9.6. Perhaps the original 9.8 was right there on the cusp and the later grader was stricter.

Sucks I know, but it has always been said that taking it out of the slab has its risk. I had one that also got downgraded, but I'm still risking one for the JSC signing. These are the types of things that fuel the pressing bandwagon. (Or maybe a conspiracy by CGC to encourage CCS use??)
