  1. First thing is to get the grader notes, without that we can't tell.
  2. That's the rub and why I don't entertain the thought of buying such collections.
  3. tell me about it, I lost so much money on those damn energy stocks. So much for diversifying my portfolio!
  4. The free market throws all the "shoulds" out of the window. If collectors want that first comic with Harley Qunn more than they want Spawn's first appearance, than so be it. Supply an demand and all that. We can say this for anything (fun example to follow) What did you mean then? Honestly curious. Because even the other way around it doesn't work. Look at Alf. The comic book that is worth the most featuring him is not the first comic he appears in but the 50th or so. Is that ok? In the end, the free market reigns supreme.
  5. But remember, if that boba fett comic printed today has a imited Dell otto cover, it could be worth even more than Star Wars 42.
  6. All of Hickman's work on avengers and all of Snyder's work on Batman.
  7. It wasn't common like it is now, for sure. But that's not what the OP asked. They have a high end book purchased in the 90s and they want to know if high end books were pressed back then to know if there is a possibility that they own a pressed book. And the answer is yes to all. High end books were being pressed in the 90s and thus there is a chance that book was pressed.
  8. Quality over quantity, I can get behind that. I have more than that, but not more than 3000 I think.
  9. Nice! I am sending that book for the simonson sig too!
  10. So should Amazing Spider-man 1 be worth the same as Amazing Spider-man 100 because all these comics came after Amazing Fantasy 15? I, like you, don't care as much to get the first comic appearance of a character not native to comics, but the statement about comics being worth the same as others makes no sense to me.
  11. It was not rare, it was just not the industry standard it is now for the collectable market simply because less books were worth getting pressed. Since that number has grown, due to the CGC 9.8 market, pressing to obtain this has grown as well. But it was always around. Trying to ameliorate a comic's appearance has been around for a long time, as can be seen with all the GA and SA books that have restored labels, which is a lot. At the same time that those comics were getting a colour touch or a tear sealed, they were being pressed as well to remove wrinkles and flatten corners. I can see this being a common practice on bigger books since the mid 70s. Here is an example of a press used for comics at that time:
  12. Here's one I bet you didn't know about. It's a comic I really want but just can't bring myself to spend this much on. https://www.mycomicshop.com/search?IID=8112091 What I recomend is you attack those first since they will likely go up faster in price than modern books which tend to vary a lot. A really hot modern comic can plummet in price later when something else comes along attracting money from speculators, who then sell off the stuff that is cooling down. So a book like walking dead 1, could actually lose money overtime. And you could wait 4 years to save $1000 while your silver age books go up $1000. I mean, check this history of Walking Dead 1 prices (I write more after the pic) Knowing this, what I did is get the silver age books first. My favourite Marvel characters were Doctor Doom and Daredevil so I bought their first appearances, whatever I could afford at the time. Now the comics are worth a lot more, but what I am most happy about is that I don't have to spend the higher amount they are worth now to have them in my collection. And now I can buy books that went down in price like the first appearance of Elektra (or death of Elektra). Oh and after having been burnt too many times on e-bay, I just gave up on it. Especially with the added obstacle of me being in a country foreign to the US (even though we are neighbours), it just because too much of a hassle when something went wrong. With golden age books, there are a ton of extra things to worry about, like restoration and replaced staples, and centrefolds that come from other books and on and on that I just can't trust a random person on e-bay. If it's worth my while, odds are it is offered through a more esteemed channel.
  13. Reminds me of this awesome listing from Hertiage, you have to read that description. https://comics.ha.com/itm/golden-age-1938-1955-/miscellaneous-golden-to-modern-age-low-grade-reader-s-copies-comics-long-box-group-various-publishers-1940s-90s-total-18-box-lots-/a/121239-11341.s?ic4=GalleryView-Thumbnail-071515
  14. Thanks for the topic. Yeah, I could find much better use of $3900 (starting bid!). Then again I might be interested... oh wait... may not ship to Canada?! I guess it's my loss then
  15. It's not just the artwork but the feel of the newsprint and the size. It's as wholesome as apple pie.
  16. Wondering if I should feel insulted now. It's one thing when I talk about myself, but to hear it from someone else.... just messing. Yeah, it's not just high end, they won't say no to more money. You even get stuff like this: https://comics.ha.com/itm/golden-age-1938-1955-/bronze-to-modern-age-miscellaneous-comics-long-box-group-various-publishers-1970s-2000s-condition-average-vg-fn/a/122026-19362.s?ic4=GalleryView-ShortDescription-071515
  17. Heritage can be dirt cheap if you want it to be. I should know, I have almost no money, hence why Fawcetts are the only GA superhero comics I can afford Here's some examples of me being cheap on heritage: https://comics.ha.com/itm/golden-age-1938-1955-/captain-marvel-jr-28-fawcett-publications-1945-cgc-fn-55-cream-to-off-white-pages/a/122001-11192.s?ic4=GalleryView-Thumbnail-071515 https://comics.ha.com/itm/golden-age-1938-1955-/superhero/whiz-comics-103-fawcett-publications-1948-cgc-fn-vf-70-off-white-to-white-pages/a/121948-12000.s https://comics.ha.com/itm/silver-age-1956-1969-/superhero/detective-comics-group-of-18-dc-1961-68-condition-average-gd-vg-total-18-comic-books-/a/121935-11607.s https://comics.ha.com/itm/silver-age-1956-1969-/superhero/justice-league-of-america-10-15-group-dc-1962-condition-average-vg-total-6-comic-books-/a/121209-11351.s?ic2=mybidspage-lotlinks-12202013&tab=MyBids-101116 https://comics.ha.com/itm/silver-age-1956-1969-/superhero/fantastic-four-group-marvel-1964-70-total-6-comic-books-/a/121209-11254.s?ic2=mybidspage-lotlinks-12202013&tab=MyBids-101116 https://comics.ha.com/itm/bronze-age-1970-1979-/superhero/captain-marvel-33-marvel-1974-cgc-vf-85-off-white-to-white-pages/a/121947-17383.s https://comics.ha.com/itm/animation-art/production-cel/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-shredder-production-cel-murakami-wolf-swenson-1987-/a/121947-17280.s
  18. That's amazing! I collect exactly those type of golden age books, from the Fawcett company. That Marvel Family number 1 is out of my price range too though.
  19. That's freaken AWESOME. and no it's not mine, just the first thing that popped up in a Google search.
  20. For golden age or silver age lots, I go to heritage auctions. For silver age and golden age slabbed books, I go to comiclink. For everything else there's Mycomicshop.com
  21. Its not. It's just graded as if there was scribbling on the cover, like this 7.5 below signed by Neal Adam's and not authenticated which, in all honesty, doesn't look all that far from a 7.5 anyways.
  22. Of course, that seperate CBCS signature system comes at an extra cost. So you're already paying extra online for the signature/remark and now you have to pay extra again to have it authenticated, and it aint cheap. I don't know if it will cost extra on top of that for authenticating a remark (since it's usually 30$ per signature). And that's before even knowing if these will end up high grade or not. So you could end up paying an extra $100 for a comic worth $50 after all. Of course, grabbing some for your personal collection and appreciating them as they are is the best way to go since you won`t be spending more than you have to. I myself would buy some for my personal collection if I didn't have that hefty shipping price to pay due to living in Canada. I too look forward to another convention to add some witnessed remarks to my collection. All the best!
