At The Mountains of Madness by H.P. Lovecraft.   Panther Books  2nd printing   1970   $25

Creepy cover art by John Dore and John Claridge on this early Panther edition that largely is the contents of the Arkham House hardcover edition.

Fine Plus/Very Fine minus - a few light wear spots. Tough black cover.

  2. Hi,

I am visiting my parents in SW Ontario and will be popping over the border to see a football game.  It's been years since I've frequented any shops in Metro Detroit (i.e. Classic Movie & Comic Centre in Livonia back in the day) and was curious if there are any shops with good back issue inventory.  It seems there are so few shops that have good Gold, Silver, and Bronze stock these days!

I'm open to any and all suggestions (food, comic, or otherwise).  Worst case, there's a great rare used book store I'll check out along with a Coney Dog or two...

    Cheers,

    John

Can't believe this sucker is actually here. Years and years of solicits, cancellations, re-solicits, rinse and repeat. And even once it was released, it took him two weeks to ship and get to me, which is very odd for IST these days. In recent months I've been getting my shipments in a matter of days. Should have known that Phantom Stranger would keep taking his time. Looking forward to digging into it.

An incredible piece of history, at least to me, recently came into my possession. A customer at my old shop in New Orleans had visited the DC offices back in the 70s or 80s and was able to get his copy of Showcase 4 signed and inscribed to him by Carmine Infantino, Joe Kubert and Julius Schwartz. First two signed on the cover and Julie signed on the first page. He was also able to snap a couple pictures of Joe and Julie signing his comic. Super excited to add this historical trio to my collection

This is the folklore that Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk were not A-List Marvel characters. Only Spider-Man and the X-Men were, which is what put Marvel Studios in a tough position. Yet they were all flagship characters that made Marvel Entertainment a household-recognized brand for decades. Including action figures, t-shirts, lamps, puzzles and more. Part of why Disney purchased Marvel.

But even before they rolled out the live MCU films, Marvel had worked with Lionsgate to roll out the 2006-2007 Marvel animated films to re-introduce the characters to general audiences and remind long-time fans how key they were to the Marvel Universe. And they sold very well. I still have mine in the movie collection. Including The Invincible Iron Man, Doctor Strange and Thor standalone animated films.

Best Buy: Ultimate Avengers Movie Collection [2 Discs] [DVD]

WB/DC just keeps changing its roadmap to the point it gets confusing where they are taking its characters. And they don't even have to be in a forced connected universe if they could just get the story straight what are these all about.

I very much enjoyed Ultimate Avengers et al.

In addition I hope they have learned you need to put out a very high quality product. Very well written otherwise it will flounder like The Flash. Is the Flash an A-list property?

Depends on your definition.  I think for the hardcore DC comic folks, Flash is A list.  For casual movie goers, the A listers are Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.  That being said, we have examples of non A Listers becoming flagship characters at Marvel due to compelling, well received movies (e.g. Iron Man).

The End of Eternity by Isaac Asimov   Signet S1493   1st PB, 1st Printing   February 1958     $12

Richard Powers cover art on another glossy Signet.

Fine.  Square and glossy. Spine is tight, has some stresses and wear to the tips. Covers are bright and glossy. Has light reader crease and some finger bending. One hard crease on back cover and some non color breaking ones as well.  Pages are near white, pretty amazing.

The Currents of Space  by Isaac Asimov   Signet 1082   1st PB, 1st Printing   December 1953     $20

Great Stanley Meltzoff cover art.   Another nice Signet, they are very tough to find without a lot of creases.

Fine Plus.  Square and glossy. Spine is tight, has slight slant, some wear to the edges. Covers are bright and glossy. Has light reader crease and some finger bending, mostly on the back and some surface wear.  Light toning to interior.  Has a factory "Signet" price sticker on front and back. Rare and cool!

Strange Tales #107 CGC from Ebay.

    ST107.thumb.jpg.8a32fff90e7abb8a0c7f8894d43c2a3f.jpg

I now have completed my goal of collecting the first ten superhero issues of Strange Tales, #101 - #110. In addition, I also have Strange Tales #114, #115, #126, and #135.

I now only need Tales to Astonish #36 and Journey into Mystery #88 to obtain the first ten issues of all the early Marvel SA series. I am expecting to receive TtA #36 (raw) from Comic Connect within the next three weeks. Then I will be down to needing just one book, JiM #88.

    Well done! :headbang:
