  1. Back in 2008-2009 or so before I sold all my books which I deeply regret at this point I had about half of the CGC 9.9 ASM from ASM19 - ASM297 population as there was only 16 9.9s back then in that issue range. These books included ASM166, 245, 255, 262, 265 , 268 double cover, 275 and one of the 297 copies. These books were a set # in the Census such as ASM297 with the most copies at 3. This was 15 years ago and there's still only 3. I submitted 6 copies of ridiculously nice looking 297s which one was flawless and I was thinking CGC 10 or 9.9 at worst. Was one of my 9.8s by the time it came back. I've seen what the 9.9s look like first hand in regards to NON-METAL or NON-Hard covers and this was a perfect candidate. Not really sure they're looking at handing out CGC 9.9s anymore unless the books have those hardened covers or maybe they get downgraded from page counting and multiple people handling books which would be unfortunate but the regular old comic books getting a CGC 9.9 grade seems even more rare than a unicorn crapping rainbows these days. I wish you luck on your submission though ;-)

Looks like 4318799013 is the last in the series of submissions.  I couldn't find another copy.  My first instinct was that this was a joke, or forgery, but the certification number is valid, and the scans are legitimate.  This one is definitely an outlier!  If this seller has any honesty, they should ask CGC to regrade it free of charge.  It's not like there is a 0.2 difference in grade between what is labeled and what condition the book is actually in.  This is a significant difference in quality between this book and a 9.8.

Passing this off as a 9.8 just because it says 9.8 is not cool.  This can lead people to believe that this seller is not very honest.

The person that owns this book probably wouldn't bother wanting to spend money on S&H to get a 5.0-5.5 book back from CGC that would never sell. Best bet is to crack it out of it's case. It could serve a long and purposeful life time as a bathroom reader or something to that effect IMO.

  3. I was already at 30 points after that abysmal 3rd round so figured it didn't really matter. Personally I think when I am screwing up the most I'm not thinking what "I" think the grade is but rather what CGC would grade it at. When I look at them from my perspective and try and stay true to that, it seems to turn out better. Haven't done many of these but congrats to the winners! You people have some really good eyeballs and knowledge grade wise ;-)

Hey at least it looks like you're stopped. Good stuff. Not driving around at 90mph trying to send pics of Ninja Turtles counterfeit copies like some people ;-)

    Grats on the signature!

Amen. I over graded the first three books by like three to four points a piece 😁

Sounds like an exact description of my misery but no bullseye's to cover myself. Originally had all 3 books graded lower by 1-2 points but bumped them because, hey it's GA books and CGC might be more lenient on them lol

    Headline Comics #11 @ 8.0  (+4)

    Out of the Shadows #8  @ 5.5  (+3)

    Fight Comics #28 @ 7.0   (+4)

    My Romantic Adventures #68   @ 6.0   (+1)

    Nature Boy #3  @ 6.5  (+1)

Correct.  I originally thought I had a 7 on Round 2 but pretty sure I have a 6 for an 11 total...nothing to get too chimey about but my best start I think so far in one of these things...now, nailing 15 consecutive bullseyes just might put me in the running... :insane:

Yeah that torn book from end to end I had never anticipated getting a 4.0 so got hammered with 5 points on that. Had no idea where that was going grade wise but had a bullseye and 4 points total on the other 4 books. 1 rough book can put anyone pretty far back in regards to this stuff. You're doing alot better than my 17. God speed ;-)

That 18 year old thread has some information, but outdated, in that price guides are back to differentiating prices for issues missing the tattooz insert, or the tattooz missing from the insert.

I'm still trying to figure out how CGC can tell if an insert has been married into a different book than where it originated (e.g. pulled from FF 252 and inserted into ASM 238).  Any theories???

Is there some type of identifier on the inserts that tip off where it was originally used?  Or do they look for staple holes that don't match up perfectly, like extra staple holes? The wrong positioning on the page, doesn't line up exactly to the top of the page or some other marker?  Different tattooz assigned to each comic title, so they can tell it has the wrong one?  Can they even see the tattooz in the insert? Seems like it would be difficult to tell if original or replacement. Maybe @The Lions Den knows from his past experiences.

I also wonder if there are any instances where a legit 238 gets a qualified label for a married insert because it looks a bit off?  You send in what you know is a legit 238, CGC grader gives it the slant eye, calls it married, gets encapsulated, game over.

You can't even recheck it yourself when you get it back, without cracking it out and wasting your grading money.  Probably crack it anyway and take your chances on try #2, hoping to miss that same grader.

All good questions my friend ;-)

I just added the thread in as it had some answers but obviously not all. Curious myself as I've heard of them recognizing that there was no Tatooz included when the book or some of them rather had been created.

  8. I'm insanely picky on what i send into CGC when doing this as it is a definite possibility in any scenario. Much more likely if you are buying 9.8s and just sending them in without doing major inspections on the books prior to sending them in after buying them though. There was a time when CGC was too lenient it seems and some of the blue label 9.8s were just not 9.8s by any standards imo. Best thing you can do is cherry pick your best looking 9.8s and re-sell the others that you think might not come back after being handled yet again by multiple hands and signed. It's a pain in the behind as we'd all like to think that a 9.8 should come back as a 9.8 after being signed but not every 9.8 is a nice 9.8 and not every 9.8 is even a 9.8 in some cases. Be careful on what you submit and if CGC handles the books well the vast majority of good looking 9.8s should come back as 9.8s. That being said anything is possible once the book is cracked and being handled by multiple ppl once again so there's always a possibility of problems but going back to cherry picking the best books cuts the odds of that drastically down at any rate. Best of luck to all in future submissions!

I keep reporting this person_who_is_obnoxiously_self-impressed each time he lists my book for sale. I lost count ~15 times now

Lol yeah they're jokes, hijacking other ppl's accounts left and right. The feedback is almost always an overseas ebay seller that sells wine racks or children's socks or something in that direction. Generally non english in the feedback as well. They always have a triple or quadrouple signed ASM 300 up too and many other pricey books with the picture saying you must buy it at the BIN price or something. That loop's been going on for quite awhile. Report for listing practices and offering to sell outside of ebay and ebay usually has them down within 24 hours. Does seem to take them awhile at times though unfortunately. Hopefully no one's falling for that garbage.
