Not a western comic but a western reader...

kidwithwdcs_zpssfx08bh6.jpg

Robotman, I'm glad you stopped by since that picture from your thread was the inspiration for my Western theme.

I found some pictures of advertising cards for upcoming issues of Roy Rogers comics. I wasn't sure if these were real so has anyone seen these before?

Roy Rogers was crowned "king" by his studio in a massive publicity campaign and he became the sudden rage in 1942 after the most popular cowboy Gene Autry enlisted into the Army and flew planes for the US Army Air Corps. Dell Comics managed to snag Rogers for its comics and he first appeared in Four Color 38. This issue marked the first Western title for the new Four Color series and the first Western comic with a color photo cover. Rogers was hot at this time and it was reported that this first issue sold a million copies in the first 24 hours and in 1957 each of his comics was selling at a rate of 2 million copies. [1]

The popularity of Western comics has certainly changed over the years. It's hard to imagine any comic selling a million copies today.

The popularity of the entire comic book genre, given the competition of the current age, what with the internet, smartphones, etc. Times have changed, but at least the field of comics hasn't been relegated to Dinosaur status.

I hope everyone is having a nice Christmas. This is my annual holiday quiz with comic related photos.

A few have been shown before but they share a theme.

This has been shown before and I bet most of you would love to have some of these comic gift packages for Christmas.

I would like that Cap package. We all love comics!

I'm going to read a few comics on Christmas. How about you?

This 1945 DC Comics Christmas party photo was posted in comics general but I thought it would have more interest here in gold.

I was able to identify a few people but can you identify others? Apparently Jack Leibowitz, Stan Kaye and Joe Kubert were there.

On number 4 that is the cast from THE BLACK SLEEP rather than PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE. In PLAN 9 the only real cast member is Tor Johnson. Lugosi was not part of the cast as he died before the film was shot. Some silent test footage, possibly but not definitely, from Wood's unmade THE GHOUL GOES WEST was cut into the movie. The rest was played by chiropractor Dr. Tom Mason (with a Dracula cape always held across his face). John Carradine and Lon Chaney Jr. were not in Plan 9 at all. :hi:

I hope everyone had nice holidays. Here are answers to the quiz.

I found a picture of Bill Cogswell of Arlington VA reading Whiz 119 in 1949 from a blog.

http://comicsdc.blogspot.com/

A reader saw that blog and sent him a copy of Whiz 119 for Christmas 2015.

4f0fefb38c8e02f46c27a79fb93278d5_zps8j8dzmm3.jpg

1. John Carridine, Lon Chaney Jr, Bela Lugosi, Tor Johnson reading WDCS 190

2. Gene Autry & Jane Withers read Whiz 3

3. Bob Crane (Col Hogan) reads Hogan's Heroes 2

4. Ryan and Tatum O'Neal in Paper Moon reading Famous Funnies 25

5. James Brown holding Werewolf by Night 23

6. Little Archie 73, Casper and Nightmare 37, Archie's TV Laugh-out 15, MAD super special 11, Betty & Veronica, Rawhide Kid

7. Charlie Chaplin & family, boy (2nd from left) holding Popeye and girl (3rd from left) holding Classics Illustrated

8. Roy Rogers, Dale Evans and kids all reading Dell comics, one is I Love Lucy 6

9. The Munsters, Eddie is reading Yogi Bear 16

10. Joan Crawford was accused of child abuse by daughter Christina years later in her book.

11. This is an interesting picture because the man is Tennessee senator Estes Kefauver who was chairman for the 1950s Senate subcommittees for Organized Crime and Juvenile Delinquency which targeted comic books. Kefauver fought against organized crime and believed the sale and distribution of objectionable comics was controlled by organized crime. Kefauver believed only some comics were bad for children and he is shown here with his daughters holding Dell comics. Dell refused to join the Comics Code Authority since they believed their comics were already wholesome and they did not want to be associated with other objectionable publishers.

comics shown: Western Roundup 3, Tarzan 54
