Truth is, MOST of the sales are fine and fun. Most of the members are great people and considerate. Like anywhere else, it's the 1% lunatic fringe of the bad apples that you notice.

Unfortunately, that 1% seems to keep growing.

Like late last year when that scammer showed up that went back through our sales history, copied old book links, and then pretended those books were his. Because they were underpriced, folks were jumping within minutes to post the TAKE IT before even checking why all the photos were taken on different backgrounds and lighting.

slickrickcomics - not that the name was a warning

Uhmmmm - anyone notice that book is owned by a board member?

This board doesn't exist in a vacuum. It isn't hard for the public to view or join the boards and it stands to reason that, in general, the boards is a reasonable cross section of humanity - warts and all.

This is the best comic book community online. There are many decent, kind, and honest board members here - people worth knowing and meeting and talking to. Somehow most of the trolls, ripoff artists, and POS have left or made some attempt to fit in.

Very true, Dave. There are a lot of positive traits here. Even when people need assistance, board members scramble to bring help where needed. It is more community than chat board.

And like you said, being an open community for pretty much anyone to join, there can be some surprises. So if a deal looks too amazing, and the listings seem questionable, better to not jump off the deep end just to grab something up that later on you regret.

Saying that is not being negative about the general community. It is the sensible thing to do, no matter where you purchase.

I forget sometimes not everyone grew up in NY;) thanks!

I thought you grew up in Boone Grove Indiana?

Did someone here grow up there? I lived near there growing up, and I spent a year at the Junior High/High school way back when.

This x 1,000. If folks bought a little more carefully we'd have a lot less tsuris.

You made me Google tsuris.

Well, Buffalo, is KIND of in NY;) It's sometimes used interchangeably with "agita";)

In the context of scamming people, I would agree. But "cool books" applies to more than outright scammers. There are many, many sellers here that I would not deal with under any circumstances due to their actions, statements, board personas, actions in real life, etc. that many, many others excuse and sometimes even celebrate.

And why?

Cool books.

I have a bit of sympathy for those that are new and wander into a deal with someone like Symbiotic. You can't know everything about these boards when you are new, no matter how many "vets" try to PM and tell you who to avoid nor how smart and forward thinking you might be.

It takes some time and personal experience or at least it should to figure it out. Unfortunately, many on these boards put popularity and cool books above anything else.

I think these boards are one of the safest places on the internet to buy anything really, and not be scammed if you are willing to do a minimum of legwork. Now whether or not you are buying from someone that is just a , person is another thing that bothers me to my core with this "community". This is a collection of people with similar interests that can do some great things when others are in need.

A community, in my opinion, would speak with their hearts, and their wallets, no matter how cool the books are. The scammers have almost always been weeded out here. I have never been concerned with that personally. Supporting others that have demonstrated appalling and offensive behaviors and attitudes is what blows my mind.

Indeed, some will buy off the devil if they could make 40 cents. or it's a book they 'need' It's a shame but it's a free world. I can only hope that sellers with poor reputations have a smaller number of buyers and realize lower prices. I won't even click into a sales thread if I don't trust the seller and believe I'm far from the only one.

It was a joke. I live in Northwest Indiana and head out that way all the time in the summer with my friends on our Harley's. We also shoot over to Kouts, then head south to North Judson to the Wooden Nickel. Sometimes then to Bass Lake or down to San Piere to the famous " Oasis". :acclaim:

Is this thread to discuss probation nominations or just probation in general...
it's supposed to be the former and not the latter

I disagree.

I'm just trying to make sure you noobs get it right. :makepoint:

You should have seen the confusion before a change was made to the title of this thread and the probation list thread. That was fun. ;)

Personally I treat this thread like an area to discuss everything related to probation. This includes the philosophy and proactive approach to the subject.

The general discussion is everything related to sales but not to the probation list.

It seems most things around here are being redefined so this is not set in stone. (thumbs u

The list is already losing its integrity. Some of us are simply trying to stop the erosion. At the end of the day it seems the need for vengeance is winning out. I would guess it is noob voting but with the anonymous system who knows.

Yup. The call of "add him to the HOS list" seems quite strong these days. Maybe too strong.

I agree, I think we are losing the original point of the HOS list. It was for serious actions, most of which constituted acts which were akin to stealing.

AlleyBat attempted to steal $5k in a Batman 1 scam

Comic Supply took money for numerous orders and never sent the items

Heral2galactus had multiple transactions where he received items/money and never reciprocated.

lol where does jokerfish and the crusade you led against him fit into that?

everyone keeps saying that HOS is reserved for the worst of the worst but looking just at the HOS members added in 2013, it seems to not match that description.

granted some of the things solarcadet and gijoe did were horrible, but does it really compare to thomas neely, redrocks or beerbohm?

I'm not suggesting even for a minute that anyone should be taken off that list. Just trying to understand how some people have the impression of what that lists really consists of.

HOS admittance standards is like CGC grading.

There are strict periods and loose periods.

Only the mods can stop me if I break rules. I'm here to stay and follow all rules and keep sourcing books.

I have a question, why are you so eager to stay here?

Money and cool books. :(

So many here have given up every ounce of integrity or sense of decency in the pursuit of both. It is shameful and embarrassing but hey, at least some despicable people can have friends on the internets because they sell cool books.

Not really a community I am feeling I want to be associated with all that much and that is sad.

I agree, but I like to think the majority of the community feels the same way and will continue to let a good deal pass by before giving up their integrity.

You've only been here a year, give it time.

true dat!

there is no shortage of modern variant collectors that will line up to buy from Symbiotic via PM even if he declared "I am done". Heck they have no problem buying from him openly if he starts a sale thread right now. The mantra here is "hey, as long as you haven't screw me, you are COOL...with me...so screw someone else and I am fine"

Unfortunately, I have seen this far too many times.

I remember I had been complaining to a friend of mine about the latest hot deal I had lost to someone else, and I had finished up by saying something like "well, you know, I got over it, I realized I could live without it", and he just looked at me and laughed and said quite correctly "you can live without any of it". I'll always love him for that clarity.

I know business has always been business, buy cheap and sell dear, as they used to say, but I do think that with all the variants, exclusives, limited editions, sketch covers and generally all the artificial production of scarcity that defines today's market, it has encouraged the grasping profit seeking as a kind of game.

The production of artificial scarcity, there is probably a better way to put it, but for me that has brought out some of the worst features of the market place. 2c

Very well said, and I agree. I responded to someone last night that I think Spider-Man #1 may be the straw that breaks the camel's back, or literally busts this bubble. How in the world did Marvel not learn from the X-Force/X-Men glut of the early 90's It's seems an endless cycle from Anthropomorphic B&W tutlesesque, to X-Men/X-Force polybagged multiple copy, to Semi-Porn female pin-up cover girls, to sketcharo New 52, Image #1 next WD, and I am sure there were many before, some I missed, with more to come. Read and collect what you like and enjoy. The rewards will come, sometimes that even includes money.

He failed to complete multiple deals while continuing to buy things on the boards. When he was confronted, he claimed he had given out his ID to relatives and he was not doing the buying (so he was allowing shills to use his id). I really don't remember the rest. I highly doubt I was the only one saying anything because I DO remember, I waited over a year before saying anything about the deal he failed to complete with me, so someone else must have brought it up. However, If you are still upset about him, you can look it up yourself.

and lol...

Everyone should just drop it, Thing is not a part of the comic community. Its obvious he has very little respect for our rules and members. I for one will avoid any type of exchange with him be it monetary or verbal.

The sooner the subject is dropped the sooner he will go back to the WC.

On another front, has anyone been able to make contact with joker-fish? I also bought from him (and have already paid) and cannot make contact. :(
