Mound City Collection One of the Greatest Silver Age Finds of the Century

2,756 posts in this topic

When you are submitting the books for grading you have an option to choose to have them scanned by CGC at $3 a pop.

Don't know if you did that or not.

My understanding--which is over five years old now and could have changed since then--is that CGC scans every book on the way in the door, but that they only make those scans available to you if you pay them the $3. I haven't bought the scans before, but I'd be amazed if they went through anybody's picture hosting interface to upload scans to a hosting site, I assumed they'd just give them to you on a CD that gets shipped back to you along with your books.

cgc sends the IMAGE to your email address if you pay for the service...i only use express service with imaging and the extra $3 fee

its a great service/fee to use if you dont have a great scanner for slabs..as most people seem to have a problem with scanning..worth the $3..especially for ebay posts/sales threads...

Okay, sorry this wasn't finished last night like I said it would be, there was some trouble with the Yahoo site we currently use, but we've fixed it, and the first two boxes of slabbed comics have been updated and uploaded (text only, scans will follow soon). These first two boxes that we've put up, are among the best in the collection. There are a wide variety of key issues from series including ASM, BB, DD, Metal Men, and many others. I've also included the Overstreet grade value estimations.

Anyway, I'll be working on getting the other several boxes updated later this week - today I had to go out and take apart a kid's playground that I bought at another auction earlier this week. My kid should be born anytime in the next week and a half or so (this is Rob Lite, btw) so now I've got a playground to rebuild in my backyard.

Alright, well, the updates can be viewed at http://www.moundcityauctions.com under the Silver Age Comic Book Auction tab on the left side of the screen.

a little suggestion...

you dont need to bother with any descriptive copy, or artists writer data and especially a synopses for each book... . Strip all that out and just leave First appearances etc. I know you think more info is better, but to us, its like a car auction that would list all the design changes from year to year., or Mickey Mantles batting stats for the tear of a card etc. At this point, no one is buying these SA books cause the story sounds "interesting!"

And we all either know all that stuff, or are interested in any book for its grade, or significance as a key book. Less can be more... and less work for you. If anything, use the description to describe the condition of the book, like "looks NM except a small tear bk cver" or " staple pulled o/w VF/NM"

Guys buying raw books will appreciate reading what scans may not show well.

wait, it would be a mistake to omit certain artists work as many collectors only buy certain artists. Like Neal Adams art and/or cover, Jim Steranko, Bernie Wrightson (in DC horror). Kirby is great, but he drew almost every SA Marvel, so listing him doesnt make the book stand out.

thing is, this is such a complicated hobby from the outside though it makes perfect sense from inside! Like a ferrinner watching a baseball game, or us at a cricket match.

heres three examples:

Captain America #110 "No Longer Alone!" February 1969. Written by Stan Lee, art by Jim Steranko and Joe Sinnott. Rick Jones takes Bucky's place at Captain America's side.

needs only say:

Jim Steranko cvr/art

Captain America #116 "Far Worse Than Death!" August 1969. Written by Stan Lee, art by Gene Colan and Joe Sinnott. The Red Skull has taken over Captain America's body, using the Cosmic Cube to switch bodies with him. He then dissolves Cap's partnership with Rick Jones.

needs only say:

......

Captain America #117 "The Coming Of...The Falcon!" September 1969. Written by Stan Lee, art by Gene Colan, Joe Sinnott, and John Romita Sr. First appearance of The Falcon. Noteworthy for being the first appearance of one of the earliest black superheroes.

needs only say:

First appearance of The Falcon

wait wait!! also VERY important! list when a book is Highest Graded Copy, and 2nd Highest/ And try to list how many better graded copies are in the census as well. (Tied with 3 others for third best copy) Especially for keys. This data is probably the most important data for collectors.

Great info. we will start with whatever the CGC puts on the slab, something about what the guide says as to value, and the artists. CGC has all the 1st appearance of whoever on it so we will too.

Rob Lite went home for the day, I may hit a few licks after I go get some coffee. We are very close on securing our room, Tina (my wife is on the phone with them right now). All I can say now is you are going to love the site. We are getting you some fantastic room rates!

Agreed. We know what happened in the book and don't need a plot synopsis. Noting first appearances of a major character can't hurt.

Any information related to grading is important and pointing out flaws that are difficult to see in a scan is always appreciated.

It is a good idea to point out a book that is one of the best known copies according to the CGC census. Best known copies sell for crazy money and copies that are near the top of the Census sell for a premium.

Good luck with the auctions.

Consider joining GPA for the actual sales data of CGC graded comics. It is cheap and accurate. When the auction is over you can cancel your membership.

We already joined GPA, and used it to decide which books to submit at CGC. Thanks for the suggestion however. The guide is Overstreet, and it is over at my son's home. I forgot the name (OK, I'm a dope, I admit it).

Hey, everyone thanks for the ideas.

New information alert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

We will be holding the auction at the AmeriStar Casino in St. Charles, MO

http://www.ameristar.com/St_Charles.aspx? The hotel is only a few years old and is fantastic. They are working with us on room rates.

The casino has fantastic security, lots of restaurants and bars and a free shuttle to and from the airport in St. Louis. It is only about 12 miles from the airport, and is located in what we think is the best part of the whole area Old Town St. Charles.

We are planning on a Oct. 31st pre-view with costumes allowed, and encouraged (we will award a $100 credit to the bidder with the best costume)

The auction will be on Nov. 1st and 2nd. We will be splitting the comics and offering some of the key issues on each day.

We will be putting a small sticker on each slabbed book identifing it as from the Mound City Collection (don't worry we will not cover any comic book parts with it and it will be on the back at the top).

We will consider doing some sort of certificate if we get done with all the required work of on-line bidding, a catalog and such.

just a note: the people you want to be bidding $1000s on these comics, or who fly to buy comics in auctions don't usually dress up for Halloween on business trips. Just at home with their kids. And not for a chance at a lousy 100 bucks
