Think of Shelter Island as being Northwest of downtown San Diego. You basically follow Harbor Drive along the coast, north of downtown, past the airport, until you get to that area. It's not connected to Coronado. You're right near the water and it's not as insane as downtown. They have concerts out there during the summer, but it gets real cool outside at night.

I found good deals at hotel circle - right at $100 a night. Some Hotel Circle hotels had a shuttle bus. The Handelry did not. I walked to the Red Trolley (or whatever the train is called) and took that in.

How often does the red trolley run from Hotel Circle to downtown SD, and when does it stop running in case I get out of a SDCC movie at say 11:00 pm and don't want to pay for a cab?

Looks like the trolley runs until nearly 2 a.m. It costs $5 a day.
