Everyone should check their smoke detectors. All of ours were downstairs only. At 1:00 AM, my daughter came screaming in our bedroom that the house was on fire. I ran into her bedroom, whick was located upstairs near ours to find the curtain on fire. I put that out and noticed the whole wall turn red and was glowing. By 1:05 AM the wife, daughter and dog was out of the house. I spent 5 minutes making 2 trips back in. I grabbed 2 CGC boxes each trip. The second trip was risky. The power had gone out and it was smokey. My wife sent the sheriff after me when I went in the second time. He couldn't catch me though. I did throw up for about 15 minutes afterwards but, was fine except for sore lungs for a few hours. If my daughter hadn't woke up, I am certain none of us would still be here. I am proud of her for her maturity. I didn't tell the parametics I was sick when they asked if we were. They were both girls and I wondered why one of them looked at me strangely. About 5 minutes later I realized I forgot to zip my pants when the fire broke out. No time to put underwear on either. I walked by about 100 firemen too. You would have thought someone would have let me know.

We'll never meet except through these boards because I'm in the UK, but I know you a little through your posts to these boards and it's heartening to me - and I'm hopeful to you as well - that such an outpouring of support from so many here, the caring words of both friends and strangers - exemplifies how cohesive this far flung, effectively world wide community of us like minded geeks really is.

Your story also just goes to show that our passion for this hobby , next only to love of family, friends and animals -and in your case, horrifically, almost literally - is the fire in which we burn.

Chasing that second box - is, I imagine, exactly what I and perhaps most of us would have done, sherrif or no sherrif. I honestly dont know how much our hobby has penetrated the mainstream, but I daresay the fire fighters and the sherrif all had you pegged as crazy for going back in for a box of funny papers long before anyone happened to notice your fly was unzipped. Right there with you buddy.

I once walked the full length of Oxford Street in the rush hour not realising until 2 miles and half an hour later that my fly was undone. Took me that long to wonder why so many women seemed to find me so interesting that day...sure enjoyed the attention though...!

...and I hadnt thought of that in years, please forgive my digression!

Mike, we are all pulling for you, wishing you and your family well - you sound like pretty extraordinary people. You'll take care of each other and the rest will take care of itself, in time. God bless.

Mike, thank God you guys are ok. I'm so sorry to hear about this, and actually just found out about it from a CBCA email blast. I am boarding a plane, but will call you tonight. Nice to see the board pitching in to help, and Sharon - you rock!!!

Mike, obviously we're all glad that first and foremost you are all ok.

Great effort to Sharon and all those involved.

Zipper..man you were lucky..I wasn't even wearing pants..or underwear..lol

Still like me you are still finding a few things to laugh at so you'll be Okay..

I am so glad your family and pets all made it out..really really glad

BUT seriously..you should go to get your blood work done (they can check your oxygen levels in your blood etc) at the hospital it sucks but I didn't go with the first ambulance they had to call another one for me hours later when the smoke inhalation hit..just go to get checked out..you have insurance so better safe than sorry..

The chemicals from burning household items and the soot and ash are all toxic I hope you at least get checked out somewhere..

Glad to hear you're OK.....We had a house fire about 20 years ago...I lost all my books. I, too, ran outside without much thought....wearing only a T-shirt and NO pants or underwear. The next door neighbor, Mrs. Freeman, noticed and brought me a pair of her hubby's pants. GOD BLESS...

I haven't been on in several days and just now saw this thread. I feel so badly for Mike and his family. What a truly horrifying ordeal. I want to do what I can to help. I have not read all of these posts either. Is Sharon the boardie handling all of the paypal information? Please give me a heads up on how I can send them some money.

Scott

Mike, I'm very thankful your family and you made it out physically unhurt. I have only met you once, but I could tell from just that one meeting the passion you have for the hobby.

I won't admonish you for going back in because I probably would have done the same.
