Just a quick comment on Kevin's post. The Saturday he meant was April 30th at the show and not this weekend.... sorry Alex. Our mystery guest will be signing at the CGC booth on Sunday and know do not ask CGC who it is because we aren't telling them either.

Thanks

Peter Dixon

I've been told that you should look for a big article about the upcoming Paradise Comics Toronto Comicon in Monday's METRO NEWS, that free paper that they give out on the subway line. The article will also be posted online at:

http://metronews.ca

ALSO:

1/4 page and banner ads will start running in the Toronto Star starting this week thanking people for voting for the SHUSTER AWARDS and offering a special incentive admission coupon for the PARADISE COMICS TORONTO COMICON to Toronto Star readers who clip out the coupon and bring it to the Comicon box office on April 29 or 30.

ED FURNESS (1911-2005)

Ed Furness emigrated with his family to Canada as a child from the United Kingdom. Growing up in Toronto, Ed had a propensity for cartoon illustration and demonstrated this aptitude by graduating from the Ontario College of Art in 1933. Ed was instrumental in developing Freelance, a popular superhero icon for Canadian, and ultimately American, children during the war, by joining forces with writer Ted McCall at Anglo American Publishing in July of 1941. Furness also drew 'Commander Steele' in Grand Slam Comics from 1941 and many other comic book stories. Ed honed his creative talent and ultimately became the lead artist for Anglo American Publishing, having thirteen artists in his stable. The advent of the War Measures Conservation Act coming to an end in 1946 precipitated the demise of the Canadian comics industry and Anglo American made one last ditch effort to distribute their periodicals in the United States in color and failed. Ed closed the doors at Anglo American on one sad day in 1956 and went on to do commercial art and landscape painting.

Ed Furness passed away on April 21, 2005.

My condolences to his family and friends.

Kevin

There's going to be a big article on the Convention and the Shuster Awards, including an interview with legend and Comicon guest Jerry Robinson in NEXT Week's Saturday Toronto Star (April 30).
