Right now the three biggest worldwide box office movies of 2014 are super hero movies! :cloud9:

Captain America: The Winter Soldier = Worldwide: $710,690,000.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 = Worldwide: $702,782,000.

X-Men: Days of Future Past = Worldwide: $692,066,000.

Anybody still want to say people are sick of super hero movies, and it`s just a fad?

The whole wide world loves super heroes.

Marvel super heroes.

Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created an empire the likes that can only be matched by George Lucas and Star Wars!

i'm sick of terrible super hero movies; luckily, 2 of the 3 on the list were pretty good. of course, when Transformers blows past these by $300MM, what will that say about the taste of the worldwide movie viewing audience?

Speaking of Transformers we will find another big time movie that has strong ties with the comic book community.

Factor in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy and TMNT movies, and we will find that movies based on comic books now dominate the box office.

Marvel super heroes.

Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created an empire the likes that can only be matched by George Lucas and Star Wars!

If you look at last years top foreign movies, this years movies are coming up way short:

Frozen $1,259,103,000

Iron Man 3 $1,215,439,994

Despicable Me 2 $970,761,885

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug $958,366,855

Hunger Games: Catching Fire $864,565,663

Fast & Furious 6 $788,679,850

Monster University $743,559,607

Gravity $716,392,705

Similar results when you compare to 2012 too:

The Avengers $1,518,594,910

Skyfall $1,108,561,013

The Dark Knight Rises $1,084,439,099

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey $1,017,003,568

Ice Age: Continental Drift $877,244,782

Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn 2 $829,685,377

Amazing Spider-Man $757,930,663

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted $746,921,274

Domestically, no movie so far from 2014 is even a top 8 movie in 2013 *or* 2012. I'm sure the studios are pleased with those results. Studios love making less money year over year on movies, but spending more for that privilege. lol

Good thing for superhero movies this year, as imagine how poor the box office would have been without them?

Sure, that's one way to spin it. :baiting:

Sony execs didn't push back ASM3 because they were sitting on a goldmine. More likely, they're thinking 'we've lost 2/3's of the domestic audience since the first Spider-man movie. how did we screw this up so badly and what can we do to fix it?'

Some of those numbers changed with Sunday's data being finalized. But ASM2 still did not break the $200 MM domestic box office barrier by day 52. But it is getting closer.

I'm not saying this to rile you up, because I really do enjoy superhero movies, but this is just a Hollywood trend built on a strong foundation. People will get sick of the same programming (if not already-thus weakening WW numbers). It really be the studio's fault not giving the mainstream enough variety, when we start getting Punisher: War Zones or Catwomen. Despite huge pricetags they really do gravitate towards high concept projects for maximum world wide box-office.

To "us" (on this board) it's a lot variety, but don't be surprised to hear some moviegoers during previews, sigh and go "Another one?". I wish they would spread them out more myself, but with the sleeping giant DC awakening, it's gonna be a cluster- :censored: of funnybook movies to frontload on their opening weekends.

Yeah, seriously. The market is becoming saturated with content overall (as a semi-related note, there are ~350 scripted original TV series running this year on US television, and that could top 400 next year - there is a massive oversupply of content growing by the day), and superhero films in particular. Cap 2, ASM 2 and XM DOFP in a row was just overkill (I have only managed to see one so far, and I am a fan of all three movie franchises). The ASM 2 results alone support my contention that fatigue is starting to set in.

Also, given that movie ticket prices continue to climb, these results probably reflect less actual tickets sold than comparable box office results from even a couple of years ago. I wouldn't say the Cap 2/ASM 2/DOFP results are weak, but I think it's a stretch to say that superhero films are going from strength to strength. I would not be surprised if we're slightly past the tipping point for the superhero movie craze.

I think the non-comic book audience was getting tired of superhero films a while ago. The rest of us will always see them eventually. I don't think it's an excuse to make a dumb film. Even good films work for kids and adults alike.

Again if they are tired of them then why are the top 3 biggest worldwide box office movies of 2014 superhero movies?

Can anybody answer that?

What I think it is the non-comic book audience hasn`t grown tired of superhero films, but it`s the old school comic book audience themselves who are tired of them. :o

For some reason the comic book audience who always wanted to be taken serious by mainstream isn`t enjoying how mainstream has taken to these characters.

Remember the old slogan "Comic books aren't just for kids anymore!"

Let`s be fair. Who bashes the superhero comic book films the most?

The new non-comic book audience or old school comic book audience?

I have a feeling some people are not liking that their comic books are now accepted big time by the mainstream audience.

Kind of like an exclusive club not wanting new members. hm

People who know these characters often bash the films because they do a terrible job of capturing these characters on screen. When you see a beloved character just mangled in a film (like me watching Garfield's ASM) it doesn't make you want to rush out to see the sequel. People who haven't read the comics for 25+ years may not have the same reaction. I thoroughly enjoyed DOFP, and I'm sure that this is partially due to the fact that I haven't read the comics nor am invested in the X-men as my childhood favorites.

I love Iron Man but hated Iron Man 3 along with everyone else. My wife and mother in law also disliked IM 3 but liked the first two. Like most non-comic readers they watched them predominantly for RD Jr but ended up enjoying the subject matter. But even they realized that the writing in 3 was awful (and I asked them before I told them what I thought because I wanted to hear their untainted opinion).

I'm getting a kick out of watching you jump from one cliched explanation to another for these underperformances though, and am on the edge of my seat to see which one is next.

I am getting a kick out how no one can explain why the top three highest grossing pictures in the whole world are superhero movies!

1.Captain America: The Winter Soldier

2. Amazing Spider Man 2

3.X-Men: Days of Future Past

If people are tired of them, then they must be really sick of the other genres even more. :o

An undeniable fact is Marvel comic book characters are the hottest thing in mainstream movies.

Mainstream loves them. :cloud9:

:gossip:

This is what is going to happen next folks.

Guardians of the Galaxy will do at least 500 million worldwide to break into the top 5 biggest grossing movies of the year, but we will still hear tired old stories from old school comic book fans who will say mainstream is tired of super hero movies.

:)

If GOTG does only $500 million the film will be considered a flop, especially if the domestic/international ratios we saw on the other 2014 films is similar there.

:)

because the year isn't over and the other summer "blockbusters" fell even flatter: godzilla, how to train your dragon. as was earlier pointed out, this has been a pretty weak year for box office results.

Where is the evidence that the general movie going public are getting tired of super-hero movies?

People keep saying it on here but I've yet to see any proof of such a conclusion.
