This looks like an example of a book where the cover overhangs the pages and then when the book moves during shipping the overhang is crushed against the inner well. It sucks and has seemingly always been a problem that is difficult to avoid.

Always learning something new. CGC said to send it back as a mechanical error return (my third in the past couple of months) and that CCS would fix it. Does anyone know if the CCS press will be expedited at all?

Just got this back and while happy with the grade; I'd expect a book going through express to not have newton rings, have the inner well lay flat in the outer well (to prevent newton rings), and not have that big rectangular indent on the back of the inner well.

Newton rings are annoying.....but the rectangular indent on the back is referred to as puddling.  It has been shown in another thread that it can damage the book over time when someone cracked out their book that had this.  Although your particular book appears to be of a lower grade, that defect in the inner well of the CGC holder absolutely should not be there.

Puddling still happens? :(

Unfortunately....yes.

@onlyweaknesskryptonite made this post last month about getting some of his books back with puddling.

And board member Dan'el also made this post last month about his book having the same type of problem.

Would a good definition of puddling be:  "An indentation of the inner well that presses against the comic, causing damage over time"?

Yes.  That was on three (out of 4) of my Terry Austin signing books. This was there second trip back for "fixing"

Two of them arrived back yesterday.

Both having puddling AGAIN :frustrated:

and this time they decided to add some Newton Rings to the front of one of them.

as if that wasn't enough.  I noticed some creases that are located about where that member had that screwdriver mark. So I checked back through each of my scans. Here are the scans and progression of the damage.

Yes. You can see my post above. I was able to get good pictures of the "puddling "

I received a comic back last month that had been torn at the staples, with the interior of the comic falling out down into the case.  It wasn't like this when I submitted it, obviously.

So I was told to send it back, and they would contact me with options.
Instead they reholdered it, added "small staple tear" to the graders notes with the same grade, and sent it back to me with whatever liquid this is all over the inside of the case. It doesn't match the rainbow newton rings that are on the back.

So they noted the staple tears....but didn’t change the grade?

Awesome possum

Yes.

Joeypost provided an example of it in this post from 2020 where he actually cracked a book out of a CGC case that exhibits this problem.

In the second image, you can clearly see the impressions left in the book from the puddling.
