I was first exposed to Dr. Who when I lived in England, 1979-1982, and the reruns on public TV when I got back to the States. I thought the series was pretty good with my favorite Doctors being Tom Baker and Peter Davidson, but my favorite sci-fi show was Blakes 7. Like the early Doctor Whos, the special effects for Blakes 7 were a little lacking, but the storylines were excellent. I'm hoping Blakes 7 region 1 DVDs will be available someday. Perhaps Blakes 7 will come back but not likely because it didn't have the fan base like Doctor Who. In any event, I'll be checking out the new Doctor Who.

If any of you haven't yet seen it, I urge you to try these two episodes on their repeat this Thursday, before you miss the chance.

They really are worth it.

I'm aching to find out how the ratings were compared to BSG.

If American viewers can just get past the Slitheen two-parter - and that will be some trick, let me tell you - then we have new fans for sure. I can't imagine anyone seeing "Dalek" or some of the spectacular stuff waiting at the end of the first series without making devotees out of them.

And "The Christmas Invasion!" An hour of sheer joy! smile.gif

Now see...i think the Slitheen are going to be the big sellers for the American audience.

Those were great episodes, with the exception of the running "gag".

Oh, no. Dare I ask....?

So I watched the first couple of episodes over the weekend. I see a lot of potential and a couple of problems. Eccleston is awesome, got a little bit of Tom Baker in him without going overboard. He pulls off the eccentricity that's what the Doctor's all about. The production values are also very high, and I don't just mean the special effects and the money spent. There were some genuinely creepy sequences in the first episode - the folks behind the camera here are clearly not hacks. I also like the fact that they are willing to do more sophisticated storytelling - and by 'sophisticated', I don't mean 'adult' but rather 'complex and thought-provoking'. I loved the conspiracy theorist guy who collects information on the Doctor! I was really hoping he'd be a regular, but then he got killed for no good reason. Oh well.

Problem #1: This is a comedy with action-adventure overtones in a sci-fi setting. Doctor Who has always had an element of the whimsical but, when it was good, it took itself at least mostly seriously. The element of farce in this incarnation of the show is a little unsettling, maybe because I'm comparing to the original, which I quite liked on PBS in the 80s/90s. I mean, really, it's not that different in tone from Red Dwarf in that show's later seasons.

Problem #2: The pacing is way off. 'Classic' Doctor Who did a much better job of taking its time about telling a story, and providing a beginning, middle, and end. In the first episode of the new series, the Doctor just appears in mid-adventure, fighting living plastic dummies for no apparent reason. I understand that this episode was meant to introduce the concept and the characters, but you need some kind of plot, too, guys. Shows like Lost and BSG can get away with 45-minute self-contained episodes and tell quite a bit of story in that time, because the main characters and the setting generally don't change. But every week, the Doctor is going to go to a new place, meet a new supporting cast, encounter a problem, solve the problem, and leave. Either plot or characterization or both (and both were strengths of the OS, in my opinion) have to suffer. Just have to.

This show could be great once it finds its legs. A fantastic lead actor, a clever production team, and a proven intriguing concept should make a winning combination. I'm not sold for good, but I'll stay tuned for awhile.

Doctor A.

I thought you'd stopped posting on here........

While you're here, can't we somehow use Steve Geppi's worldwide connections to publicise the hunt for the missing 108 Doctor Who episodes in some fashion ???

I can raise plenty of fans who'd chip in money if it could be undertaken.

Ian,

For those of us that go back quite a few years to when DW first came to

the states, is there a decent website that lists the episodes, show by show,

season by season, without undue editorial.

I agree with some of the others voicing here that the pacing of the first

two shows was just a bit off. Very good, but for someone that's been

thru 6 different Doctors, sad, I have missed a few, the pacing of the

production is missing something, and I don't quite know what.

The ratings are in for the first two episodes on Sci-Fi and they did almost as well as first run Stargate and Battlestar Galactica episodes.

Not bad for a new launch and one which the Sci-Fi channel didn't have to pay to create themselves.

If they improve, it could become the Sci-Fi channel's top show.

If you slip halfway into one, that's called a semi-comma.

They get progressively better as the season goes on...

Though I'm not a big fan of the two-parter...
