I guess strip art is still hot! yowza.

Sigh. I will never own a top Alex Raymond piece.

The quality of his work during his prime period of 1934-36, whether it be Flash Gordon, Jungle Jim or Secret Agent X-9, is just breathtaking.

Unfortunately, the deepness of the pockets of the people collecting his work is even more breathtaking.

U a potential buyer ? or the seller ?

I've never sold a piece of art, only collect silver surfer pieces...and I don't have a cover in my collection (at least not from original series)

OK now I see.

But now REALLY dont understand.

Fingers crossed would have made me think GATOR was the winner,...which some here say was NOT the case.

So confused.

hm

PS - I think notions of 'Cabal' are 9 out of 10 times mere 'paranoid fantasy' but still....is this Cabal stuff going on? :P

I won (not a Cabal member)

Socialized medicine paying pretty well! :baiting:

The Male Call strip was known for always having a payoff GGA gag featuring Miss Lace, this one has pin-up shots in all four panels so it's kind of an ultimate example. Also Male Call OA is much less common than Terry or Steve Canyon, so commands a rarity premium.

Yeah, and for people who might be thinking "pin-up shots in a tiny little daily, big deal", the OA for these vintage dailies is surprisingly big.

Shocked at $4.1k for that Erik Larsen SM page :o No Spidey and a narrow panel of Sinister Six headshots.

Is Larsen the new McFarlane hm

Alot of Larsen's ASM art was destroyed in a house fire so there is a rarity to it. Plus rule of 25. Kids that were reading Larsen spidey 25 years ago now have money.

Bagley and Saviuk look like great deals right now.

I have confidence that this is an achievable goal for you, Tim. I mean, two Rip Kirbys sold for <$1.6K and two Secret Agent X-9s sold for <$4K today.

Heck, the way AAPL stock is rebounding, I'd expect you to be in the mix for a Flash Gordon Sunday here.

tth2, great minds think alike!

(thumbs u

You also made me realize that I had completely spaced out and written that the Dragon Lady was kissing Terry (which would`ve been cradle robbing, even in 1930s China) rather than Pat.

Now fixed!

My wife would probably kill me more dead for coming home with a six-figure Flash Gordon than with a Lamborghini. lol

I do own a Secret Agent X-9 already ;) but the X-9s are all just dailies (although huge). I lust for a big, sumptuous, lush Flash Gordon Sunday.

The prices for the X-9s in this auction were quite frustrating, actually, as I`d gotten tired of getting outbid by the inexhaustible pockets vacuuming up Raymonds in previous auctions, so only put in tepid proxy bids and then went to sleep because I knew I couldn`t stay awake long enough for the live bidding to get to the Rs. (Note to Heritage: how about not doing everything by strict alphabetical order every time!)

If I could`ve been there during the live bidding, I know I would`ve driven those prices up, although I`m sure I still would`ve lost in the end. :sorry:

The Flash Gordon was a great example prime period and with Flash, Dale and Queen plus Flash asking Dale to marry him. $131K was a very good price.

Owning a complete Flash Gordon from the 30's by Raymond may be too high for me, I am satisfied with the single Gordon panel (no Flash) I won last year.

I was the under bidder on a few things in HA. I did get one nice Al Williamson example, page 1 from the X-9 story from Flash Gordon #4. Where they describe X-9, the next page with the villainous woman was also nice. Each page except for page 4 went over $3K. Very healthy for Williamson non-Flash Gordon pages from the period.

Congrats on winning the Silver Surfer cover!

Yeah nice pick up at that price. $70k is pretty good for a journeyman artist. ;)

Curious why the KK passed at 30K? Seemed fair given PIH results for others from this portfolio.

I thought the other ones at PIH last year were a lot better. I mean "Kubla's Anguish" was probably my favorite piece in that entire sale.

That reserve price for the KK didn`t make any sense to me at all.

Considering what Frazetta`s published B&W pieces have gone for, "published" meaning pieces that appeared in classic editions of ERB`s series and introduced Frazetta`s work to generations of sci-fi/fantasy fans, it didn`t make any sense that B&W pieces that only appeared in a standalone portfolio would rival those prices.

Curious where you'd value this piece (I am pretty new here obviously). At the PIH auction the plates from the KK portfolio pulled 55+11, 70+14, and 45+12. Its easy to argue those were better pieces than this one but I guess I was still expecting a bid. The Black Nazgul pulled close to 80k (another league really).

Did you beat out a certain widow collector for that page?

He beat my bids, that's for sure. At least two people went again after I stopped.

Anybody else shocked over the Michael Golden Dr.Strange piece final gavel?

I'm stunned.

If I had not stood in front of it in San diego and saw it in all its glory I would have posted the exact same thing.

After seeing it in person my heart told me 60k was going to probably be what it took to take it home. It's the kind of piece people go to the mat for.

Were you the guys who beat me out on the 1st Appearance of Black Widow page from Tales of Suspense on ComicLink? :)
