Well that franchise has left the door wide open.

They've dropped the ball massively, anyone can claim it, and run with the space opera theme without fear of being labelled an imitator.

Honestly, try this experiment with someone you know who likes Star Wars.

Tell them you've got a story about a young man whose father was the epitome of darkness and corruption, and that he was mentored by a robed man with a white beard. Tell them the villain's name is literally pronounced "Dark Side". And how that hero struggles with his own dark nature inherited from said father. Tell them other names like 'Mark Moonrider', tell them about The Source, since it rhymes with something fairly well known, tell them about "light swords" and boom tubes allowing staggering leaps through the galaxy, etc.

I'm willing to bet most people will tell you that sounds like a blatant rip off of Star Wars.

Then you can tell them that Jack Kirby's New Gods/Fourth World Saga premiered in late 1970.

Journalist Edward Summers interviewed Lucas in the late 70s' and wrote that when Summers pressed Lucas on comics being an influence, he sidestepped it and seemed "annoyed".

Lucas is enough of a comics fan to cite Al Williamson as his top choice for the SW syndicated strip and write forwards to collections about Alex Raymond. Frank Zappa's son told an anecdote about when Kirby and Frank Zappa met and how Kirby told Frank that someone who worked for Gary Kurtz told Jack apologetically that "he knew" Lucas had strip-mined New Gods and Doctor Doom.

I'd support outlawing anyone publishing/filming a work of fiction or non-fiction if the ideas have been used before in any medium. While this would end the publishing and movie industries, it would also dramatically cut down on people claiming their ideas were "original," despite their having been in human societies since there were human societies, and whining "their" ideas were being ripped off.

There's an argument to be made about tropes and ideas being recycled since the stone age but I think that's generally accepted and supported. Such is the tapestry of existence and storytelling.

I do not think Jack Kirby ever whined that his ideas were ripped off. My post was in response to a specific remark about anyone worried about their ideas being ripped off; the point is that everything has a source foundation of inspiration.

Yup. There is no such thing as an "original idea". There are only original stories. Anakin was born of a virgin FFS. lol

There are tons of coinciding story beats that occur within short amounts of time, too, such as Fourth World and Star Wars. The original Justice League (ZSJL) would have preceded Infinity War/Endgame, which share remarkably similar concepts. JL was originally going to be a two-parter, too! (That was changed before filming, though.)

These coincidences probably have something to do with individuals being born and raised in similar circumstances. You're bound to end up with some people who have eerily-similar thoughts and creative processes.

I’m not doubting George Lucas took ideas ideas from comic books, but I believe the bigger idea source was other movies, mainly Akira Kurosawa samurai films, John Ford westerns, and a war movie or two. Particularly, Kurosawa’s Hidden Fortress is about a warrior named General Rokurota who must escort the Princess Yuki and royal gold across enemy territory. Along the way, they enlist the aid of two greedy peasants who we first meet as they’re arguing while traversing through the desert. The movie includes a mind trick the General uses on enemy sentries, a sword battle with Rokoruta’s old nemesis General Tadokoro, a scarred Tadokoro aiding the heroes at the end and a reward ceremony.  Look up “The Dambusters” and you’ll see where the trench battle on the Death Star came from, almost word for word and shot for shot minus the Luke stuff.

How much more of this do you guys think Feige will try to poop out before he finally cries uncle and starts recasting/casting the A-list villains and heroes people actually care about ?(shrug)

-J.

Why would Kevin Feige and Disney basically wipe out 10-20 years of successful world building just to start Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, T’Challa, and Thanos all over again? Because they’re not going to.

If Marvel Studios wants to bring back Iron Man, it will be a different person and actor  inside that suit, maybe a relative of Stark. Wakanda Forever already established T’Challa has a son and heir with the exact same name. If you want Thanos back, it’s just as easy to bring in a Thanos from the multiverse if you want to team him with Adam Warlock for a Magus storyline.

Marvel Studiios will never reboot the MCU. It’s much easier (and a better business plan) to keep growing the universe and treat OG MCU heroes as legacy mantles to be passed on to new heroes/actors.

Superhero fatigue has also completely set in for me, since the DCU has killed all interest in their film IP.

That's what I'm thinking also.  Fatigue seems to have really set in and I just don't have faith that the masses will come out to the theaters to see this (like they did for Avatar 2 & Top Gun).  My spidey senses are feeling like this will be a big dud at the box office.

I wasn't thinking this, until I have heard of extensive reshoots required by Marvel to add "humor" as they felt the film had too strong of a serious overtone.

This is unfortunate.

Be careful reading GFR. They are the We Got This Covered of our times. :nyah:
