FWIW, there are something like 4 Superman Books (3 Actions #1s and the best Superman #1) and 4 Batman books (the 4 best Detective 27s) that would sell for more than 3.6 million. A few of those would sell for 2x/3x or more.

Which is just a saying. The idea that a Silver Age book could even temporarily take over the top spot is CRAZY CRAZY

I'm sure it will hit the national news media.

I'm pretty sure that this is the same book that was auctioned off at Sotheby's in the mid-1990s. I went to the preview to see the book in person. If memory serves, I think it sold for for $40,000.

I know it has changed hands multiple times since then. It's been easy to track because it has some very identifiable characteristics.

What a sale! That was fun to watch.

Do you know which 9.4 it was? Any sales in GPA you can point to? I'd love to track the book through the ages (I definitely have the Sotheby's catalog, if it was sold there- do you know what year?)

the live bidding worked fine...there was no issue with bidding

Internet bidding did not, as many reported the site crashing at the start and not recovering until we'll into the ASMs. The ASM1 9.4 was sold to the Internet - it follows therefore that bids could have been missed, unless you have information that I don't? Also, the ASM1 initially showed online as unsold to me when I finally managed to join online. Do we know what happened there?

At least one internet bidder, any number of them are referred to as "heritage live" by the auctioneer, was involved with the push from 2.6 to 3 million. There was another bidder on the phone. I was able to watch this live as the site was not down for me.

Thanks - your analysis is great by the way Rob. And it is a historic sale. But am I right to conclude that some potential bidders may have been excluded? Not only on the AF15 but on some of the books that immediately followed? The Internet issue appears to have affected people in several locations. I'm slightly puzzled by the low key response to it and feel I must be missing something.

Are we thinking there could have been some bids lost/foregone in this glitch?

Enough people posted across threads here indicating they couldn't access the auction, so yes. Logic suggests a massive surge in interest might affect site availability. Can you imagine how many people were logging on globally at that precise point? And AF15 is the first lot, and sold within moments of that start.

I've never seen an auction start with the big guns. They're always at the end. They must have considered the possibility of a massive global online viewing surge - why sell the big one within moments of that start?

It's possible that there were people shut out by the outage. If I were looking to bid on this book (or any real rarity) I'd have the phone number handy, for sure.

It's first alphanumerically! All their auctions start with A1 and end with zot!

I didn't know that, thanks. It didn't seem to work for them on this occasion, did it, alphanumerical. Shame they didn't have some ABBA fan magazines to sell in the session. Allow the access to settle down a bit.

Also, there have been times where they have re-run auctions because of widespread outages. I don't know that they'd do that in this particular case, but it has happened at least a couple of times that I remember

That would presumably depend on the number of calls of complaint from thwarted bidders. No calls, no re-run, I would suppose.
